weather conditions

To some of you experts that fish out there in the jettys. What are the best conditions to go out and fish the jettys as far as winds and wave heights…

Dear Gone…My experience is that what you get going out and what you get going back can be dramatically different. It doesn’t matter if you drown going or coming does it? Weather patterns are best in mid summer when we experience the Bermuda Highs that are dominated by southerly winds, hot weather and high pressure. Of course that isn’t necessarily the best time to catch fish, as water temperatures are high. You also have huge thunderstorms to deal with. The Spring and Fall are best times to fish, and generally if you get out there early, and come back early you can experience a quality day. I say early because once the sun rises on the horizon it affects wind and wind acts with tides to create a “washtub effect” on the area between Fort Sumter and Sullivan’s Island known as “The Deadman”. It can be very dangerous for boaters in the sub 20 foot class to get caught in that stretch of water. Always wear your life jacket when fishing at the jetties. I don’t fish there anymore, and I have a 20 foot boat. Plenty of good fishing inshore, and I don’t need the “excitement” that hangs out there anymore. Have at it my friend. Keep a sharp heavy knife on board to cut your anchor line, and don’t cut your engine off. Just sayin’.
