Weatherby Vanguard

Is a Weatherby Vanguard a reasonably decent gun? what is the difference between the old version and the S2?

Vanguard is the entry level Weatherby rifle. It and the Howa 1500 are basic clones of one another. They are made in the same factory in Japan. The newer ones come with an accuracy guarantee of 1" at 100yds but it could be with a specific loading which means a $20.00 box of Cor-Locts might not be it while a $45.00 box of Federal Premium could be. Decent trigger but not great. I had an older Vanguard in .300 Wby Mag and will never own another one, more due to the load than anything, it wasn’t very accurate, was loud as hell and had a stiff recoil. Weatherby chambering/ammo is expensive to buy and expensive to load and simply isn’t needed for any game animal in the southeast or for the lower 48 for that matter.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

I have friends that has one in 30-06 and another a 308 and both love it. I have a S & W 1500. It is made by Howa. You can take the bolt from a S & W 1500, Mossburg 1500, Howa 1500, or a Vanguard and fits them all. Same with recoil pads and the old gun chaps they use to sell. Mine is in 270Win and I will never get rid of it. A deer killing machine!! It is bullet finicky! Will not shoot a Rem for love or money but, will put 3 shots in a dime with Fed Prem. I made a three shot group with one hole shaped like a kidney bean once with hand loads. Win shells are ok - will do 1" or less. IMO a great gun value for the money. I would not get one in the Weatherby Mag sizes. They cost way too much, bullets hard to find, and a lot of good or better loads out there today than them.
