After being so wrong, so often the mythical weather man was spot on yesterday. April 17.
Smooth going out and almost truly flat coming back. Water temperatures were about 65 from the sound to 100 feet running out.
It took us a while but, in the afternoon, we found fish in a bit over 200 feet, near Triple Ledge, on a strong rip with a weedline. Current speed and temperature change were both strong. 75 degree water on the east side of the weeds a ways. 70 degree water on the inside of the weeds.
Not the world’s hottest bite but put some fish in the box.
Stopped for some deeper dwellers on the way back.
In the something new every time offshore category, three things this trip.
First time ever seeing an Audubon’s Shearwater. Only found in warm waters, typically seen on sargassum mats - just where we saw them. Sorry was not able to get a picture.
We had some Atlantic Spotted Dolphins come right by the boat. Not unusual to get these visitors. But, this time right alongside the boat one turned on its back and started splashing its tail hard while completely upside down. The dolphin repeated the maneuver several times. The bottom of the dolphin is pale white, almost pink. Have never seen this behavior before - no idea what it means.
Lastly, the temperature change from going out to coming back was larger than I usually see. 65 degrees from the sound to 100 feet going out. Over 70 coming back. Can only guess that the complete lack of wind let the sun warm the surface and no cooler water from below was being mixed in. Just a guess.
Sushi and sashimi for dinner last night. We have been using Lee Kum Kim brand “Supreme” soy sauce and/or Kikkoman’s “Aged” soy sauce recently. Worth trying for a bit different soy sauce taste.
