My Son and I put in at Larry Koon and went over to Dreher Island Park. We marked alot of fish in the middle (deep water). Saw some birds working next to the campground. 3 other boats were already over there chasing them. I didnt see them catch any. They also didnt hang around too long so I figured they werent catching much. I was throwing a rattle trap and pulling free lines off the back. One down rod with a weight so when I stopped the trolling motor it would sink back down when I marked fish. Good ideas, but didnt produce anything. We saw 6 deer in the campground and other wildlife. It was a good evening, very quite, smooth water, great sunset. We then cranked up and headed for the hill when we ran right over a school of fish breaking and birds diving. Chunked lures but didnt catch even a cold. Well, I take it back, it was cold. Now its 7:00pm, I’m on the couch in front of a fire. Not too bad for 3 hours on Murray, but wish we could have caught a couple. Maybe Saturday.
atleast you got to go.how old is your son?
My Son is 23 and home from college. He is a drummer in the Clemson drumline playing snare. He has been hanging around the house lately and doesnt party so I’m glad he wants to fish. I sleep better knowing he’s not driving drunk you know. Sat morning he will be heading out for Nashville to play in the (whatever) bowl. Its not SEC fotball anyway. I usually pull for USC but my money goes to Clemson. Kinda wierd I know. I dont really like ACC fooball. However, Clemson Engineering is top notch. He’ll be a ME and graduating this year.
good for him on not dui.i might make out saturday.i’m trying to decide on the coast or murray.i’ll let you know friday night if i’m going on murray.
WHAT? I would go to the coast. I was thinking about the inshore bite. My 15 ft bass tracker has it’s limitations. I would like to chip in some gas money for those around here traveling down to the coast. Its a long boring ride by myself anyway.

</font id=“quote”></blockquote id=“quote”>I haven’t been out this winter, but from previous seasons I’ve found that the deep water in the river channel out from Dreher and Timberlake is a favorite winter hangout for gar. They’ll usually be suspended and scattered throughout that whole area, maybe 40 - 50 ft down, with very little movement as they’ll show up as perfect arches on the FF. Sometimes you can ride a mile or 2 and consistanly see them just hanging there.
Not to say you couldn’t have been marking stripers, but just something to keep in mind before spending too much time on them.

I did see a couple of gar, so you might be on to something. Man, that would be sad, chasing a bunch of gar. I did see a huge group of gar in the summer near there. My Son and I caught some on a super floating worm (bubble gum color). It was fun. I have eaten gar, and its pretty good, just a pain to clean.
We caught some short striper and a large mouth in timberlake last time out. but we were in the creek, not the river channel. Judging by arch size, they were all pretty small. 16" to 18", just like we caught. I would have gone up if it were not for boat issues.
i go to the coast about every weekend from march - november.i try to fish murray in the winter months.there is a school of gar around bg man’s bridge they are there year round.
I have two sick kids and a sick wife so I never did make it out, how did you all do?
I didnt make it out either. I had some unexpected junk up. I think Im done for the winter. Hate to say it, but duty calls. Shucks
done for the winter???it’s just fixing to get right.the reds were on fire this weekend in the surf.
