Since the change to Wednesdays, this was our first break in the weather for a run to the stream. The weatherman predicted light winds and the bouy had small, spaced out seas, the boat was fueled and off we went! Left the dock at 11:30. After the first ten miles, we realized the weatherman lied once again. SLOW, PAINFULLY SLOW ride out - under 40 mph.
Lines in just north of the GT Hole at 1:30. Just as we put out the spread, it was ON! Boated the first tuna of the season. ON FIRE. A few minutes later, the meat rod gets hit - wahoo bit the hook - and nothing. And nothing and nothing and nothing and nothing. Nothing.
We trolled out to deeper water. We saw a Freeman cat out deep. I hope this doesn’t spoil their report? They had no outriggers, and were casting plugs and pulling fish over the bow. A LOT of fish. We trolled around the area, marked tons of fish 100+ feet deep, and couldn’t get any to hit what we were trolling. NOTHING. So we pulled in the lines, and started jigging. We didn’t have any luck, maybe one time (perhaps we hit the fish on the head as they were so thick), but NOTHING.
So back to trolling, NOTHING.
Ran home in confused seas. 45 mph made it fun to drive.
Still great to be out there. We couldn’t have landed the tuna from the living room. Ocean temp was 68.7. The seas were spaced 3 seconds apart, and the rare 3 foot, majority 4s and 5s. Rough, cold, wet, barren.
Tight lines,
Jason
PS I anxiously await the Freeman report - I am very interested to find out what they were casting and catching. No outriggers! Impressive!
