Weed eater line for fly line?

Im quite the beginner when it comes to fly fishing. And use it primarily to kill time during the summer. Does anyone have any thoughts on using weed eater line in addition to fly line?

How exactly do you plan do use weed eater line in a fly fishing scenario?

I’ve used weed eater line for making jigs, as a substitute for the fiber weed guards, (epoxied into a molded hole in the jig) but never used it for fly fishing. IMO, it’s way too heavy, will be too stiff & have a lot of memory & curl to have any use as line or leader and probably not enough strength to be used as backing. I’ll bet tying knots in it won’t be easy either.

Besides, fly lines are designed with the appropriate weight built into them for matching with specific rod weights. Plus, fly lines have tapers built in, as weed eater line is generally one diameter. Can’t see anyway weed eater line could have any application to fly fishing/casting.

If you want a less costly material for leader or tippet, bulk mono type line works fine, particularly for warmwater or saltwater applications. I made leaders with Big Game in the past. Of course you can simply buy a cheaper tapered leader too, something such as Berkley makes and add Trilene line as a tippet when needed.

I make some of my own leaders and use Yozuri Hybrid, which works fine for me, but no way I’m going to try weed eater line.

experience noun \ik-#712;spir–#601;n(t)s

  1. the fact or state of having been affected by or gained knowledge through direct observation or participation

  2. that thing you get just moments after you needed it.

It would never work as a fly line but it does have strength.
My buddies down in GA use it as leader for shark fishing from the beach.

Thats why they call it fishing, not catching

Spend the $70, get a Rio, take care of it and it will last 5 years. Totally worth it
