I usually use #3 or #2… I don’t like the loop. It just seems to slide sideways and snag more grass to me. Freshwater fishing for bass i use that one but for spartina I usually use #3

I don’t care for the loop either. One tip: if you don’t like the angle or position of the guard after tying it in, put a dab of clear cure glue around the base and zap it with the blue light as you are holding it right where you want it and it will anchor it.

Tell me about the blue light…

Clear Cure Goo is the dental acrylic that cures with UV light (Tuffleye is another earlier brand that uses blue light). Loon Knot Sense is similar. Once you get some you will rarely mess with epoxy again. And it doesn’t yellow with age. The only limitation I know is that you can’t use it underneath wraps, etc. for glue because the light can’t hit it. Here is the website with videos and more info.

I like #3. Not a big fan of the loop.
I have been tying more patterns that have the hook pointing up rather than down; such as bend backs, crabs, and Clouser variations. Then you don’t need the weed guard as much. Have to be sure when you strike that you keep your rod tip down with these patterns though.

FlyVet as you are tying your patterns, use the Goo in stages… I’ll use it to hold thread down on a shank then wrap more materials on and use it again and so on then use it on the head. I was watching a buddy tie some skrimps and he used hard as hull on the under wraps and finished it off with the Goo… To quote MadMike… the Goo is the Poo…
