Week of April 22 offshore

Weather Monday and Tuesday was excellent. Ocean was like a mill pond. Wednesday was kinda snotty but doable. Thursday was beautiful again. Lots of boats out Monday and Tuesday, I’m surprised there are no other reports posted.

According to VHF channel 68 it seemed most everyone was catching something Monday and Tuesday. A boat had a marlin hooked for 3 hours but lost it. Another boat put a 50 lb mahi on ice. We had around 25 mahi and one sailfish for the two days. Biggest mahi was 29 lbs on the boca grip. We caught fish from 300 ft out to 1000ft. There was a nice color change and weeds those days. We were just north of the Charleston Deep Reef MPA

Wednesday we fished same area in 1200-1300 feet. Super blue water and lots of weeds and flyers, but fewer fish.

Thursday we were just north east of the Edisto MPA. Water was a rather dingy bluish green 73 degrees from 200 ft out to maybe 1000 ft. Then there was a small weed line, a bit bluer water, and 1 degree increase in temp. A few more dolphin but not like Monday and Tuesday. We had a stud mahi to the boat Thursday, maybe 35 lbs. Did you know the rubber handle at the end of a gaff can come off? Anyway fish was lost but gaff recovered.

And on the ride home “the rookie” was real nice and removed all the lures from the rods, wound them up nice and pretty, and put them back in their cases. Unfortunately he left all on the ballyhoo on them. Curses.
