Drove up to the mtns with son, Alex, on Friday. Took a different route (for us) and left the interstate at Saluda. Talked with the guys at the local flyship about the Green River for awhile and then headed over to Brevard on what turned out to include a 10 mile, single-lane gravel road throught the woods.
Friday evening we decided to get an exercise in frustration and spent a few hours on the Davidson. As usual, those fish can tie flys better than I can fling them! Later in the evening we went up to Looking Glass Creek and played with quite a few wild trout.
On Saturday morning we went to the Green River (DH section). Alex went upstream into the wild water and C&R’d several nice trout up to 14 inches. I fished downstream from the parking lot at Fishtop Falls and managed a few nice fish including a 22" bow from the big pool. Nice AM hatches that looked like #18 light cahill. Fishing was great until about 10 AM when the place started loading up with kyacks.
Saturday afternoon we fished the area between hooker Falls to just above Triple Falls in DuPont Forest. Though there were several fishermen who had proceeded us through the pools and runs, we managed several nice fish on EHC, light cahill and, in the deeper pools, a stonefly nymph followed by a BHPT dropper. Largest was aboove the falls where #1 son C&R’d a bow that was larger than his net.
Sunday…tried to hit the East Branch French Broad but the road was closed and I didn’t know how to get to the other side of the river…did not have my map with me! Drove to the N. Mills…up to the gate to the resevoir. Took the wrong trail and walked down, and down, and down…almost to the campground. What the hell…walked and fished up all day. Numerous fish on cahill, EHC and sulphur. Son LDR’d a monster that hit a BH Prince dropper…had the fish within netting distance (almost) but…that’s fishing.
Next weekend…traveling solo…either to SW Virginia, Morganton, or Roaring River area. Any advice appreciated…company welcome!
