i was out running my F115 yamaha yesterday, ran good most of the day…when i was on the way to the ramp, i decided to open it up… i went wot and hit the trim button and the motor lost power, it did a couple more times …then stopped doing this and i could trim it up and down fine…anyone ever heard of this? what could this be??
A loose battery connection will cause this.
tanks, I will check my connections…
did you get to go???

I had the same thing happen recently. Come to find out, my starting battery had a bad cell and would not accept a charge. If I touched the trim at all it would knock the motor down big time.

Knot,
I’m no mechanic (understatement), and you’ll be best served going to one, but I’ve had a lot of boats and faced electrical problems a few times. I’ve also seen a similar problem on two of my past boats–one was due to a bad resistor in the motor, and the other was due to a loose ground wire under the cowling (SP?). I also had another problem once, where whenever I hit the trim tabs, the GPS would blink out. I spend a lot of time looking for loose wires, testing circuits, talking to mechanics, and thinking, only to finally realize that replacing the trim tab switches fixed the problem. While we were looking for the problem early on, a friend of mine noticed that the switch had a dirt dauber nest build on it. I cleaned it out really well, but no joy, so we figured that was a really odd coincidence but not the problem, since cleaning the contacts didn’t fix it. Well, after wasting a lot of time on other things, I went back to it, replaced it, and that was the solution afterall. When resistance is out of spec for a given part of a circuit, weird stuff can happen (the same holds true with ground connection and stable voltage).
Hope this helps.

thanks to all for your thoughts, I guess I will have to start looking and see what I can find
thanks again

My boat did this also. Then the trim switch quit working about a week later. Changed the switch and have not had the prolem since, could have been a coincidence…
