Went sheephead fishing Saturday...........

And caught everything you could expect to catch around a piling except sheephead. 2 blowfish, 2 spots, a dogfish, a sea bass, and a black drum. Fished several spots, some deep, some shallow, some in between to no avail. Used fresh oysters and clams. Hats off to saltfisher as you are the only guy I know that catches them inshore this time of the year. I think I am done till April. Still nice to get out on a warm day in January though

we got about 30 of them on sat but nothing was over 12". Steady bite most of the afternoon but no big ones even hooked. We used fiddlers and small live shrimp.

Do you think a lot of the larger ones have moved offshore?

not sure… Fished the day before and landed some big ones in the same area. I have learned, they dont all move offshore at once, they go out, spawn, come back, and go back out several times. I catch some big ones inshore every month, just not every day,

I guess that is why you are a guide and I am not:smiley:

x2, Fishboy. I saw him catch a 9# sheep while me and another (very capable) guide where fishin’ right next to him. He’s got the sheep thing figured out for sure…

“I’m not a hundred percent in love with your tone right now…”

Fishboy, were you losing crabs? We scaled down our hook size because the fsih were small and started hooking them… owner mosquito size 1.

I was not using crabs, i have had much better success using oysters. I seem to feel them better and catch the larger ones on oysters. Fiddler crabs seem to catch the small ones. I use a small hook, 1/0 j hook. I didn’t really miss any bites, everything that bit I hooked, it just wasn’t a sheephead on the other end of the line!

fished for them again today,1st 2 were good ones then it was all 12" or less, all on fiddlers
