West of the 226

We cleared the jetties at about 6.30am and had lines in by 8.30 - beautiful ocean on the way out. Planned on heading past the 226 but we found a huge rip with weeds and a variety of floating debris a couple miles short. Within 10 minutes we had a double on dolphin. Ended up working that area for a few hours and finished the day with 5 dolphin, all small in the 8# to 12# range. Lost a couple more, including an estimated 20#er right next to the boat.

We also found school blackfins working the surface. Ran over to them and got a knockdown immediatly, but pulled the hook on his first run. The school disappeared and we decided to run home early.

Ran in at 40mph in flat seas. This is how flat it was out there…

(no comments on my friends unnesscary and botched gaff job, please)

they usually disappear when you run over them.

Good point flat, but we did stay 30 to 40 yards outside of them because they are so boat-shy.

Shevlin,
Let me preface this by saying nice work on the phins and locating the tunas. Here’s a little heads up for everyone trying to catch the tunas: Put your lines Way back(sometimes 1/2 spool) and turn wide around the outside of the schools(not into them). When you drop the lines back it acts much like a long boat trailer in that you are able to take wide turns and have your baits cut across where the school(just like in the truck when you hit those pesky stop signs with the trailer). This will allow you to continually follow the schools without having them sound immediately. The more and more you run them over the more educated they become and the less likely you are to get them.

George Carlin said it best, ‘Think of how stupid the average person is, and then realize that half of them are stupider than that’’.

belly meat is never good anyway, so yea he shoudl have gaffed it in the head but no real loss.!!

Yes, but if you run them over, there is always a chance that you could take a few out with the props and throw them in the cooler too! Yeehaw!

If your gaff job put it on the cleaning table, then it was a good one. That’s 5 more dolphin than almost anyone else around here put in the boat yesterday.I don’t care how they were gaffed. That’s some good advice about trolling for shy tuna.Good for you on your day!

Gaff job?? At least my gaff job hit the ■■■■ fish!! We won’t talk about how your gaff job, or lack of, or missing the ENTIRE BIG FISH, cost us the biggest Phin of the day…and the tuna, well, I won’t even get into that…HAHAHA!!

Well said Troy - I’m also bad with a gaff. And pulling the hook on a tuna running drag is nobody’s fault!

Guess what, your not getting invited again. HAHA
