3M super duty marine compound
twice if needed

then a medium compound if you want very glossy finish

then glaze or thorough wash and dry

then wax in shade

Wet sanding is quite slow…

Yep, try that first! ^^

The 3M stuff is pretty amazing - get a buffer/polisher and go to town. I bought a cheap-@ss one from Harbor Freight and it did the job for me. Wet sanding shouldn’t be necessary.

yep we detail boats and i use that stuff all the time w great results. i went over it 4 times with that and and once with 3m restore wax, which has compound in it. you can still see oxidation that looks like it is deep down in there. Its a blue hull that gets tons of sun and has not been done in many years. i know it will take a while but what other choice do i have? i could use imperial, but dont think its worth the money and effort to try it since 4 times with that super duty is pretty aggressive and should have done the trick if compound will do it.
i feel the only option is to wet sand.

wow

if oxidation is that bad, you may end up burning thru too much gelcoat and then have to paint or regelcoat.

I will ask a friend of mine who had a badly oxided colored hull what he did to fix it up. Pretty sure he used 3m heavy duty compound but had a particular technique he found to work after trying some dif. things.

I have a friend that wet sanded his boat using 2200 grit paper. It turned out fantastic. Will see if I can get him to post instructions.

This stuff (3m Finesse It 2) is probably the most incredible FINAL buffing step I’ve ever seen for any clearcoat. I’ve used the standard (automotive) version many times on everything from acrylic/polyester fountain pen blanks to buffing the polyurethane finish on counter tops to an insane gloss.

Only useful on stuff that has already been previously abraded with something else; this is a last step for a super wet-look gloss.

If you want, swing by the house and I have a whole mess of 1200 wet paper and some rubber blocks. Just take it easy in the corners and keep it clean by frequency cleaning with water.

Matt, I may take you up on that. I want to come by and see the new boat too since I have been too busy to take you up on those reef trip offers. Tomorrow,I think my boss and I are going to practice wet sanding on this boat that my landlord has let go to crap in my yard. I have a few sheets of 1000 grit for our practice round but may take you up on the 1200. After that we may fish folly or we may run up north and search for a tarpon! If you want to come along to fish you are welcome to. i am only wet sanding a 2x2 section on the practice boat so should not take long.

Have you tried Dukes Mayonnaise? Seriously, I’ve had it work wonders on restoring some luster to severely oxidized boats!! Just wipe it on, and let it sit a while to penetrate. Then wash off, and apply a coat of wax. Not near as much elbow grease, and cheap enough. Only problem is it makes me hungry for a 'mater sammich during the process???

…Politicians aren’t the “Oldest Profession”, but the results are still the same!!!

Have you sent this tip to the food network? Might wanta buy C F Saur stock?

This tip brought to you by Martha Stewart, the leader in boat maintenance and decorating. Tune in next week when we show you how to get extra miles out of those old trailer bearings with bacon grease.

Also, for those that liked our tip on using eggs to stop leaks in their inboard coolant systems, we will have something for those left over egg shells…Hint…Your days of worrying about those slippery decks are over.

Again, tune in next week for Martha Stewarts boat tip of the week.

Thanks for the input Uncle Dave, but everybody knows those leftover egg shells are for stopping the roaring noises in the differential of your truck, not for slippery decks!!
