I got tired of not fishing so I tied up some creations/abominations for a couple of days. What do you think? What can I do better? What kind of weed guards do y’all like best the V type or the loop through?
Looks like you are ready for some tailers … I started tying flies with the loop and I like it, if you tie some with the loop and don’t like it a quick clip and you will have the V … good luck

I prefer a V weed guard. I feel like it is less likely to miss a strike. I use 20 pound test line for the weed guard. I am going back and forth between using Mono vs Flouro. My mind tells me to use Flouro because it is less visible but have not fished with many Flouro weed guards yet to know first hand, maybe others have better ideas about this. I put a weed guard on almost every fly I tie, thinking it is easy to cut one off but hard to come back later and add one.
On one of my favorite flies (toad fly) I use a single straight weed guard pointing forward. There is a picture of this fly on my recent post about fly fishing for reds Georgetown sc
Weed guards are an important part of the fly and something we don’t spend a lot of time thinking or talking about but probably one of the most critical aspects of the flies we use here for sc saltwater flies.
Very nice flies you have there sir, by the way!

nice looking flies. What material are you using on the top 3 flies in the bottom picture?
Thanks for the compliments guys. I got into the groove and I forgot about the weed guards! I do get to fish with one guy at his spots and we don’t need them. But everywhere else I definitely will!!! Hurricane they’re craft fur and EP streamer brush with tarantula legs I think.
What do you call those “craft fur EP streamer” flies? I’d like to try to tie some of them.
Also, here is a link that I used to learn how to tie weed guards

It depends on the shape/length/gap of your hook for your weed guard… Some work better then others for some hooks and are too short for some… experiment and see what gives you the best result for the hook. I like the loop guard on shorter crab patterns but for longer, wider hooks I like a V or the wrap around. Just remember there is no such thing as a weed"less" fly… some are just more weed Resistant

If you spin that EP Streamer bursh down and add a marabou tail, it looks like a crab … They just get expensive thats why I made that streamer brush maker a while back …

What hooks are you using, specifically the black ones?

Just saw your question. They are Owner SSW or Aki hooks, can’t remember if they are 1/0 or 1.
Cool thanks
