I don’t know…but I hate to think what’d happen if that thing decided to run into your anchor rope.
Awesome picture.

It’s against Federal law to get within 500 yards of a right whale. Surprised the Coasties didn’t break your balls for it.
Small recreational vessels are not the boats that are killing the whales. look at the ship strike reports, all container ships. they have even come into port with the whales still stuck on the bow. They even had a Navy Hydrofoil get destroyed by a whale about 10 years ago, that high speed strike even injured crewman.
Cory… Do they fine the Whale if it gets with in 500 yds of an anchored fishing boat?? We had a Sperm whale come up and take a look at us about 5 years ago. we were at SWB catching B-liners at night, and this HUGE Sperm whale comes up behind the boat and sticks his head out of the water to look at us. Makes you feel small.

Who said we got closer than 1500 feet? Good telephoto lens:sunglasses:
I did see that rule on the NOAA sight when we got back though. Good to know.
Well…I was going to wait for a nice report from the pond for my first post on CF, but I couldn’t not post something here. I was fishin the 60 this past Feb and got to watch a Right Whale for about 15-20 mins. Got a bunch of pics and one of my friends got some video. One pic actually made the front page of the Post & Courier. (One friend I was with works for the P&C so that probably helped a bit). She breached a hundred yards or so away from us and proceeded to put on quite a show. Must have breached a dozen times. At one point she came in real close to check us out(throwing distance). She almost looked playful. I was so excited if it was summer I’d have jumped in the water with her. We bumped the boat in and out of gear and followed her for a few more minutes, and then she was gone. I didn’t call CG, but did report to NOAA. They broke my balls a little for being so close, but were appreciative for the sighting info and the pics. Apparently, the rule is you can’t APPROACH one within 500 feet. Technically…she approached us, we just watched.
Anyways, congrats on your sighting! It’s not everyday you see an animal the size of a school bus alive in the ocean (much less a female and her calf). NOAA said there’s only something like 300 in the Northern Hemisphere in the Atlantic so odds are you’ll probably never see one again. Pretty f-ing cool any way you slice it!
Like I said…this is my first posting so I hope the pics make it the way they’re supposed to. If not I’ll figure out how to do it and get them on here soon. (think I did it right, or at least close to right.) Some pics aren’t so great and some are a little grainy from being photoshopped, but here they are…

don’t use the URL code. Copy the bottom line from the photo bucket account and insert between the [img]****[img] marks.
