Found these on our way out of North Edisto in 30’ of water Sunday. Glad Mic-Lite brought the camera 'cause I forgot mine! First time I have seen Right Whales in the area. We estimated the cow at 40-50 feet in length and around 18 feet across the back. The calf was probably half the size. Amazing sight!! Got to spend about twenty minutes watching them.
The heck with the whales! Look at that ocean!
Nice!
Don’t blame me! I voted for Jeff Davis!
You don’t get to see that too many times. Congrats on the experience…

We had a similar experience off of Florida several years ago. It’s amazing how small the boat starts to feel when they get close.
Cool experience.
That is cool. You won’t soon forget that.

Cool experience.
I think it could have rolled the boat with one flip of it’s tail. The enormity of such an animal is hard to grasp until you are that close to it.
man that is awesome right there. good find!

Do you think they will show up on the radar? We were running this weekend in almost no vis using the radar and GPS.

I would tend to say no. It looked much like a dead porpoise floating from a distance. The only reason we were able to see them easily is because it was so calm. I can definitely see why they are prone to being struck by vessels.
That is awesome. I fish in Hawaii on the Maui Jim each January while I’m out there for work and we’re around humpback whales the entire time.
I’ve been in the tuna tower while we were trolling and had them go under the boat and it really does make you feel small.
The best part was being half asleep staring at the spread when a huge humpback did a full breach about 100 yards behind the boat. He came out of nowhere almost all the way out of the water. That was the daymaker.

depending on your radar and what range you have it on you would definitely mark them on your radar.(when on the surface) a few weeks ago i picked up several different flocks of ducks at several different times flying just above the water (abt 35 in each ■■■■■). was pretty cool
That is so cool. Thanks for posting the pics

Without a doubt, in those ocean conditions, with that much whale sticking out of the water, my radar would pick it up easily (4 foot open array 6KW). It’s the ones just under the surface you have to worry about.
Great pics! Awesome site and beautiful ocean

Awesome pic!!! Did you call the position in to the CG? How was the fishing?

Oh yeah, the fishing:smiley: All the BSB’s you wanted to feed, couple of grouper, a trigger and some trout when we came back inshore. Nothing of substantial size though.
I had a great time with you guys as always. I won’t forget that trip for quite some time. I’ve got all the pictures and video on a cd that I will pass your way to copy.
The BSB were thick!!!
Oh yea. Nice sail picture you use.!?.!?
I finally noticed.
You know there’s some crazy requirement that you need to stay back 500 yards or something like that from the whales and steer clear.
You probably aren’t even supposed to get close enough to take a photo! Pretty soon you won’t be able to even look in their direction.
p.s. Great photo and beautiful ocean.
My fishin buddy up in VA said the scaredest hes ever been was miles off the coast of VA, slaying Tuna, when a whale went directly under them whilst on its side. He said the eye was the size of a kitchen table. Said they saw a smoke stack from the tower and thought it was a ship. As it drew closer they saw it was a whale. He said it just cruised underneath checkin them out and swam on. A mamoth creature like that could easily take a boat out. What is the proper thing to do if your sitting fishing and one appears? (haul arse? s#$% pants? be very still? bang on side of boat?
