The wife and I were hanging out on the front porch this morning and she says 'Why don’t you go fishing?" Well that was all the invitiation I needed. The weather looked kinda iffy, but what the heck I’m wet in a SOT anyway after I throw the cast net a few times.
Loaded up my stuff and launched at the Daniel Island Pier about 1 pm. Headed up stream into a screaming wind and a falling tide, but i though at least the paddle back will be easy. ANYWAY,
Paddled up and started checking our some of the big greek that dump into the Wando. Tide was still falling and I was more protected from the wind on the left hand side. Pull in and start throwing the cast net. Got some nice medioum and a few large shrimp, about 5 or 6 finger mullet, and equal number of mud minnows and 2 or 3 baby spots…time to go fishing.
I paddled way back and started working from dock to dock on the falling tide. For 20 minutes or so nothing in the boat, just a few light nibbles killing my shrimp. Then i hit one dock which will remain nameless and put 3 , that’s right 3 over the slot reds in the boat in under 15 minutes. The smallest was 26 or so and the largest was about 32 and well over 10 pounds. The big cow nearly destroyed my IM-6 graphite rod. It was bent all the way down to the handle and the tip was somewhere under the yak.
When I finally got her in the boat I couldn’t believe it… my larget red so far.
I backed off the dock and cast toward the pilings again and BAM another big red hits and starts tking drag. She turns , makes a quick loop arouind the yak, the deep into the pilings,… cut off the leader about 3 inches above the hook.
Check the rest of the leader and it looks good, re-tie, bait up, toss into the pilings again and BAM. another big red taking me for a sleigh ride. She head for the middle of the creek with me in tow. Down stream a little ways, then up over a oyster bar and into a little feedr creek…then nothing. Cut the leader on the oysters. This leader is toast, so into the tackle box for another, bait up, back
