Fished from 10:45 to 2:15 when my hands got red, harder to move and painfully cold. I fished a creek mouth that has a deeper hole where it meets the main river. I started off drifting in circles fishing the whirlpool because of all the debris in the water, wind and current and put the fish on in the picture in the first five cast and drift. Fished the bottom of the outgoing with a ton of debris that kept hanging my line and hook for the first half hour making it tough to get your bait to the fish but they were biting. The tide slowed and the debris cleared in the bite was on. I caught over 30 trout in the first hour and finished the day with 40 to 50 fish and about a 75% hook up ratio on fish. I had a hit about 20 ft out but missed it, worked it little and it hit again at about 10ft but missed that hit too. I had about 3 ft of line out from the tip of my rod and jigged it straight up and down right under the front of my kayak and hooked a decent trout. I caught several very close to my kayak so keep fishing your bait all the way in. All fish between 10 to 17 with majority being over 14. I missed a big one in the same spot I missed 1 yesterday and same thing as yesterday, just the one monster hit in that spot. I think it may be the illusive monster of this creek.
The most og milk crate you can have and my fish slayer.
Lol, you should call them and report me, its not like I work there…
I haven’t checked water temp with any form of a temp gauge in some time I will say low fifties or lower at least 3 to 4 degrees lower than last week but the fish felt warmer then the wate and usually bite better in the wi yet when I catch them like that. I think that when the school is active they warm up some. My guess would be 48 to 52. I think even though we are in a cold front they were biting good because the colder front that is coming this week. I was fishing out of bulow landing between the landing and Savannah highway in a small creek at the lower tide stage targeting deeper pockets around oyster points, mud or sand humps and creek mouths. I could of moved to find bigger fish but the wind and currents were bad today and rantowles creek can get dangerous currents. I fished most of the time at the same creek mouth that runs off a flat. Very good fishing in this area.
I’m surprised you didn’t catch some rock fish. I’ve caught some nice striped bass near bulow this time of year and even some sturgeon up towards Bradley pasture hunt club
Laughing buck tail for rockfish and a small piece of shrimp on the bottom for sturgeon.Sturgeon are illegal to keep but I hear they are great smoked.
Sman, used to be able to get a white bucktail with a one red feather in the middle from the gas station above MC on Hwy 52 split. They quit carrying them and haven’t found the same style since. They worked well. Flounder liked them too.
Not sure I’d want to tackle a big rock fish or sturgeon from a kayak!
When it warms up and different species show up I’m gonna produce some amazing catches from the kayak. As of now I think 17 inches is the biggest thing I’ve caught but I’ve been targeting numbers more then big fish.
Hey Fred ,I still have a few of those buck tails from when tri state went out of business, back behind pine haven shopping center. I’m sure with your internet savvy, you can find us a supplier. Thanks in advance. I need to restock.
Looks like gill net marks behind the head. I would contact some authorities because you can get a fine for failure to report. The DNR monitors online reports and forums to help with data collections so there is a good chance they see this picture. The dnr would probably like that carcass to study if its not to late. It looks like thrown out by catch. You said in another post you’ve seen gill nets in your area. You should report the area.
You’re right 40,it’s up to us to take down these scumbags ,you know with DNR being stretched so thin.I’ll report it but this is not my normal area,it’s near Bulow. I just got off the phone with a buddy of mine that lives near bulow and he rides down to the landing a few times a day. I told him that if he sees any shady looking characters, tell them that we’re on to them, the guy with the yellow ocean kayak is going to keep a sharp eye on them. My pal is excited about cleaning up this area and looks forward to meeting you at the landing.
It depends where and what I’m fishing if I let it sink all the way to the bottom. Some times I do what I call scrubbing the bottom, its where I lightly drag and bump the bottom a lot but also swim it a little off the bottom. This technique is better for less structured bottom and if the area has reds it will produce more reds then other techniques I use when targeting trout. I was fishing a 4 to 6ft hole while the surrounding waters varied from a ft in the 1 creek to about 2.5 in the main creek. I like to fish at the end of the outgoing and start of the incoming when the water is low and slow where the flats turn into creeks. I use a 1/64, 1/32, 1/16 or 1/8th jig head. The scrubbing technique is better with the lighter jigs and I just kind of hop it along the bottom if I have to go as heavy as an 8th because the lighter jigs will deflect off a hang up where the 8th or heavier will always get hung. If you rig a 1/64 with a 3 inch or smaller slim swim they have a neutral bouncy and will swim perfectly on a slow retrieve. Let it sink to the depth you want and slow retrieve. I fish structure like oysters with this technique and can bump the oysters with out hanging up and the reds can’t resist it.
Sman tell him to look for a shiny red f150 with a matching camper shell that’s my new truck. I have silver aftermarket tail lights and tinted windows, he should be able to easily spot me and my truck, most people can. I also fish Martin landing and a few others up to givens ferry and a couple on the edisto salt side like live oak and willtown.
