What are the best surf lures to use?

Instead of feeding crabs, I would rather be standing waist deep in water working some lures. I have not really had a lot of luck using bait in the surf, but I have never really tried to use lures that often, but I think it would be mighty fun to pick some trout and flounder off some jigs (and possibly a big red). I know there is a surf/ pier section. I have been posting on here for almost 2 years now, so there is no need to inform me of that…this section gets much more activity than the surf/pier part of this forum.

I thought about tossing some Gotcha plugs , spoons, zmans from the beach. Heck of a lot easier to bring out plugs, jigs then live bait/aerators and coolers. You’re tempting me.

Went today to the charleston angler to pick up some stuff, but they didn’t really have what I wanted. The only gotcha plug they had was too small for the beach I think…
I think a 1oz jig head with a soft plastic on it would catch a lot. I might be out there tomorrow on sullies trying some stuff.

“In every species of fish I’ve angled for, it is the ones that have got away that thrill me the most, the ones that keep fresh in my memory. So I say it is good to lose fish. If we didn’t, much of the thrill of angling would be gone.” Ray Bergman

Try a 1oz. Jig Head with a dead shrimp on it. Use just like an artificial and you should not have to worry about the crabs. Although, crabs taste better than any fish I have ever eaten.

What about a big flashy gold or silver spoon? I feel like that would be flashy enough to attract a bunch of attention.

I’ve caught trout on suspending or slow sinking baits like the MirrOlure 52 series, and under pier lights at night with a double jig “Speck Rig” (don’t know what else to call it, thats what it’s sold as in TX where I learned to use them. google will show you some pictures) Never caught much else on artificials in the surf, but I still try.
