What are your favorite tools for the job?!

I’m going to be restoring my trailer this winter and was wondering what tools you guys that have done this prefer to make the job simplier on yourselves. Christmas is a good time to stock up on some new power tools. I will be sanding down the entire trailer, axle, springs, fenders, etc. and repainting. Also replacing all the U-bolts and what not, some are rusted so may need a recipricating saw or angle grinder. Replacing all of the wood and carpet on the bunks and side steps. So my question is what are the tools you guys prefer to use when doing these tasks. Dremel tool? Prefer angle grinder over a recipricating saw? What type of sander and paint sprayer are best? And any other tools you can think of that I would need. Any pictures or links of the tools you’ve used in the past to get the job done would help too. Thanks in advance!

Sawzall with several metal cutting blades for rusted bolts(and wd40)and angle grinder with sanding pads for rust removal on frame.

I was going to do the same thing a year or so ago untill I priced out all the U bolts, leaf springs, etc… and found it cheaper to just find a used one that was in good condition.

Dremel tool!?!?!!??!

I just replaced the axels on my two trailers for my Jon boat and my 18 foot CC. I used a hack saw that still had the price tag on it. The price tag said $3.50 and also said, “Made in China”. Sorry America.

Want to borrow it?

Oh, by the way. The job took 4 hours (for each trailer). That includes cutting the axles loose with a hand held hack saw and bolting the new axels back on.

No reciprocating saw, to slow and too many blades,
Use small grinder with cutting discs.

Are you using this trailer in Saltwater???

If yes, scratch the above advice and sell that thing for a few bucks and invest in aluminum trailer.
That sure sounds like a lot of work and money for a trailer that will never keep up with salt water, no matter how much paint you use.

+1 for a 4 or 4 1/2" grinder with cut off wheels. Much faster, better in tight places and less fatigue. They are also a lot less expensive than a recip saw

Might look expensive, but i got a similar one on ebay for $50.

Cuts all that rusted metal like butter. Also great to heat up bolts to break loose.

Impact wrench, good set of ratchet & sockets & wrenches, 4 in milwaukee grinder, for clean-cutting metal a port-a-band is great just not very good in tight places, good cordless drill(some kits come with a small impact)
