WHAT AREA DO YOU LIKE ? North or South of Charlest

First let me introduce myself, my name is Lance Tidwell, I’m from Columbia and I have been lurking on her for many years just never signed up till recently. I used to have an old sportfisher in HHI and would fish regularly from there, had buddies that we would fish out to the Deli area with much success, last year was my first trip out to the Georgetown Hole and we had a great trip, now that I am trailering my 300 marlin I am wondering which areas you like the most; Charleston to the North or to the south. Is it closer to get to good fishable waters from either Georgetown-Charleston or HHI, Hilton Head is quite a drive from here, just looking for some input, and could be looking to taking on some new fishing partners if anybody wants to go when we head out.:sunglasses:</font id=“Comic Sans MS”>

i fish out of Charleston the good thing is, is that its right in the middle of the fishing grounds. you dont have to run too far to go north or south

The stream is a little closer to Charleston and out of MI etc., but I think the Deli/Sow Pen probably gets less pressure. It may be an extra ten miles on the boat from HHI, but who really cares at 4 a.m. in the morning?

Whichever direction has the best ride this time of the year, good fishing every direction.

I agree ten miles don’t matter just the other 1 1/2 hrs driving to get there, also wondering about the weed lines, at the deli I have seen weed lines that looked like you could walk across the 100 yds wide and looked like they stretched on for miles, does this happen to the north or are they more scattered?

In the beginning of the season the warmer fingers of water tend to be to the south. After the water warms up there is no real advantage in traveling in one direction over another. Is all about personal preference and were you feel like you’ll have the best shot. Of course, if I look at a SST chart and there is a finger of much warmer water to the north or south that’s where I’m headed. I tend to run straight out of Charleston to the Outcrop the most but many things can factor into where we fish for the day. I have never fished out of G-town or HHI but to answer your question I would say Charleston is a great lunching point because you have several areas to choose from: SW banks, G-Town hole, edisto banks, 226, 380, Outcrop, and plus a lot of live bottom areas on the ledge that are all 1 1/2 to 2-1/2 hours from the tip of the charleston jetties. We just sold our boat so if you ever need a crew member or have any question you can PM and I’ll help you out the best I can.

Like the SW banks area and Deli if fishing out of Edisto. Dislike Edisto Banks area. Always seems like a bunch of dead water. The Deli area seems the best for getting away from crowds but its a haul.

The tips of the jetties at Gtown are 45 miles from the GTH I believe. At closer than MI.

looking for some more input, not asking for numbers, just wanting to know why you like to fish the area you fish.
also what are the best landings to put in with a large boat and trailer truck parking that is adequate, i used to put in at shem creek (25 cc) but parking was always fun, had someone run over my trailer and tear off guide on and tear up fender, not even a note. Shem creek also has the bridge clearance issue

You have 2 options for landings- remleys in mt p or wappoo on folly rd just under wappoo cut bridge- as far as fishing the different areas…with your previous fishing knowledge and comments mentioned above…people favor spots based on their success in past, when the water is good where, how far a run it is from where a person fishes from- these are the normal things that dictate where you go fishing from anywhere- plenty of places to fish out of charleston but as you fish and experience them on your own im sure you will decide favoring or disliking certain areas based on your success there and your style of fishing- lot of ways to skin a cat and lot of different people fishing for different reasons- all areas are productive on the right day

ltid, I liken my process of deciding where to fish to a Venn Diagram (The two circles that cross in the middle).
One circle is structure, the other warm water/current rips.

Ideally I will choose to fish the area that has the greater amount of structure and warm water/current coinciding with each other.

If I cannot find an ideal spot within my fuel capacity, I then look at the species I am trying to target.

If it is early season and tuna/wahoo are the predominant species, I will choose to fish the structure more heavily (GTownHole).

If it is later and the dolphin/billfish are the predominant species I will run to the current edges in hopes of finding stacked weeds, floatsam and schooled fish.

Its never an exact science but this is the general thought process I follow.

Do not tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don’t tell them where they know the fish.
