This is a well kept secret:sunglasses:but during the early winter we use large shiners instead of herring. They are easy to keep alive and you can keep them in a live well with just an air pump running to keep them alive, heck we even take the off the hook and throw them back in the bait tank and use them agian the next time out and they are fine. It seems in the early winter the fish are feeding on smaller bait and you will sometimes get more hits on these. I will keep them in the tank with herring and will mix up, I will put out a 2-3 lines with each and see what the fish prefer and go from there.
I have also read that some guys use small bream for bait, again they are easy to keep alive but I have never had any luck with them.
Some friends only use shiners. Amazingly there are times of the year thwy will out catch everyone. Of course, they are very selective in when they go…February and March
Go figure!
