I am casually looking to get into yak fishing and would like to hear some opinions on what boat makers are best. I found a website that highlighted Wilderness Systems and Ocean Kayaks. I am not even sure what characteristics to look for, i.e. stability, speed, length, sit on top vs. sit in, etc. Thanks for any replys.
Klimpson Fan,
I will pass on to you what has been passed on to me by those who have been around the sport much longer than I have: Try before you buy. Rent each one you are interested in for at least half a day of paddlefishing. Go for the yak with speed over stability. You will develop balance with practice and time in the yak, but you cannot increase the maximum speed of a kayak. Find one that is comfortable to you and easy to fish from. Can you get to everything/reach everything? Will you be able to set this kayak up for fishing the way you want to fish? There are many good websites to visit. I will post some with the understanding that the host of this site can remove them if it against their policy.

One thing to remember, you should spend as much on your paddle as you do your yak.
I have a Tarpon 16 and am pleased with it except for the weight. It is fast and stable. I have only been in the drink one time and that was coming in on the waves. It is not a yak you want to be surfing in!

Best bet is an older model OK Drifter. I really love mine!
