what did I miss?

I took some folks off-shore last Saturday. I reviewed 3 web sites for the latest weather reports and believed that we would face 2 to 4 feet
swells at around 7 to 8 secs.
What happened?
There was chop on top of chop.
I noticed some chop in the Stono at the start of our trip.
I would like some advise as what to check for and how much of a factor
that plays in the over-all picture of the trip.
The wave height for last Saturday was 2’ or less with 7 to 8 seconds.
The wind was 5 to 7 kts.
I had 3 to 5 foot seas at 2 to 3 seconds and all of it was CHOP.
Any advise as to what I am doing wrong with the weather forecasts?
