I have a boat with gas in it (premixed with outboard oil) that needs to be emptied so I can get it ready to go. Any suggestions in regards to what to do with the gas? It’s at least a year and a half old. Boats coming from a buddy of mine. Thanks.
Where do you live?
The garbage dump on Cedar in Summerville will take it.

I have 55 gallons worth of year old gas sitting in a barrel that I keep to the side when I need to burn stuff like wood piles, leaves, etc.

What kind of barrel do you store it in? That is what I was leaning towards.
i work at a boat dealership so it is sitting in an old yamalube barrel. I am sure you can go to a boat dealership and ask if they have an old oil barrel laying around.

i like the fire ant mound idea! maybe use a piece of pipe and stick it in the mound to get the gas a lil deeper!
haha… well the redneck in me sure thought of that first… I have a field behind my house here and I could sure light some up!
Fire ant mounds are a great place for it IF you don’t mind a square foot of dead grass for a year.
Old gas will still burn very fast. that’s my favorite:smiley:

Gas is a terribly dangerous way to start fires, totally amateur.
diesel is the way to go when starting fires but if you don’t have anything else the gas works fine. I like to use gas instead of starter fluid it doesn’t take long for the coals to soak it up ![]()

Gas is explosive and the fumes are heavier than air and will collect in low areas and you won’t know it until you strike the match. I watched a friend try to start a bonfire with gas. He poured the gas on the trash pile, walked away to set down the gas tank, walked back to within 5 ft. of the pile and threw in a match and the whole area exploded, including where he was standing. He was in his 60’s and “had done it all my life”. I’ve seen people throw cups of gas on hot coals and the fire rush back up to the cup and explode. It’s just a real, real bad idea and if kids see you do then they’ll think it’s ok. I used to do it myself until I realized that I had been incredibly lucky. It ain’t worth the skin grafts.

As gas gets older and more moisture in it, it breaks down and becomes less volatile, but it takes a long time to get down to the level of diesel. The oil in it makes it less volatile as well.
Etiwan is right about the vapors. That is why it kills fire ants so well. The heavy (and toxic) vapors sink into the mound displacing the air/o2. They suffocate - it’s beautiful.
It is like any other tool: if you know how to use it, it gives an advantage. When I burn ditches, I run down ~100’ dripping no more than a quart of gas along the way. I wait for the liquid to evaporate, then light. The explosion creates a wave of fire that pushes down the ditch lighting the next pool of vapors. Too much fun. Can you tell I’m a pyro?
