Extremely new to inshore fishin. I have been out a few times and very discouraged. Always find bait net it and watch it squirm all around on a carolina rig before I toss it and IM like if i were a fish id eat the hell out of that. then i sit and sit and for a change sit some more. No bites break offs no proof fish exist other than the ones i see busting bait all around me. Saw a shark in folly chase mullet for about 30 miinutes yesterday too. I have tried creek mouths and got rays docks and got nothing. oyster beds and got hung up. where in the equation am i doin somethin wrong?
I am by no means an expert! But did you try cutting the mullet in half? I was chunking live bait the other day and didnt get a single bite. I started using cut bait and they turned on. Another thing is that if you dont catch fish in 15-20 minutes pull anchor and move on. It also depends on the time you are fishing. I have the best luck 2 hours before and 2 hours after low tide. Good luck!
Don’t have a knack for makin motors crank,
But I’m pretty good at drinkin beer.
The best way to a fisherman’s heart is through his fly.
I did try a few pieces of a bigger fish on a large hook hopin for the shark or one of his buddies. I really want to know what kind of area holds the fish or can be expected to have fish cruise through
If you know of or can find a creek that goes dry at low tide that you know holds fish, fish the mouth of it right before and after low tide. Fish will stack up at the mouth waiting to get back in there.
Fishing the really high/negative tides (like the past week) is always tough too. Try focusing on the half-moon tides. I fish whenever I can go, but I get more optimistic when tides aren’t running really hard.
It’s been said over and over this year, but the rain and wind keeps muddying up the water, and that hasn’t helped at all. It has made things very tough lately.
I went with a buddy this past Monday evening, and all we got was one ladyfish. At least we were on the water. ![]()

yea i keep scoutin. does sudden drops in depth hold fish in a creek?
Muddy water -> use cut fresh bait the bloodier the better. Fish deep water structure and soak no longer than 10-15 min. No bites then move. Eventually you’ll find em.

Most mid sizes creek mouths close around where Stono river or Kiawah river meets the Stono inlet at dead low tide are good for Bonet heads you can see them fining when they are there within a few minutes use fresh cut bait, crab, mullet, menhaden. When the tied gets up enough fish the marsh line with live mullet for big reds, and float something live over the humps and oyster mounds at creek mouth, usually productive for me.

Good advice above. I tried fishing Bushy Park, and the usually murky water was even more murky. I’m hanging up the saltwater for a few weeks to see if things dry out, and going to focus on not catching anything in freshwater either lol.
At least I can still catch dink largemouth.

Id suggest for you, until you get a little more experience just try dock fishing. Anchor (stern first) to a good looking dock, I.E. depth change,a creek mouth behind it,oysters, a channel or ditch running underneath… toss out a rod with shiny live or cut bait like finger mullet (4-9") or menhaden, under each section of the dock. Low tide is best so 2 hours befire to 2 hours after. Move docks every 15-20 minutes until you find fish. Don’t be too critical on dock selection or you’ll potentially drive past productive ones. And dont rev your motor and such backing into position.
Also dont give up fishing for deer, sept October and early Nov. are the best IMO
Try VERY fresh blue crab . You can pick up a few on your way to the landing from any market; ideally take your own trap and get some that way. I’ve heard many different ways to rig one up, some people crush them, some people take the shell off to expose the meat, some take the claws off etc. etc. I’ve had good luck splitting them in half and hooking them in the back legs past the “knuckle.” When fishing with mullet, I will usually buy a whole mullet ,guts and all .When I go to cut it up for bait I will cut fillet shaped peices off of the fish, I’ve always felt like the presentation is better especially in swift flowing water, don’t have any scientific proof on that ![]()
