I was at the 60 on Sunday with some of you guys I’m sure. We were pulling up BSBs every time we dropped. They all seemed to be between 12 31/32" and 13 1/64" but we managed to get enough for a couple dinners and left them biting.
Anyway, we took a break from bottom fishing for lunch and drinks and I started blind casting a jig. I noticed some action on top and ended up hooking up with something big and fast. I’ve caught cobia in the same way this fall and have seen reports of bonita, little tunny, false albacore, or black fin tuna.
Did anyone catch those fish on the surface? I’m sure they were there all morning but this was around 12.
Most likely a bonita, theres been a bit around lately. They get up to about 30lbs. 20lbs is a stud around here. 10 lbs are common. A 10 to 15 lb bonita will pull like crazy. They have fast short tail pumps so your rod will vibrate more than other fish. They are sporty as hell, make comparable sushi to blackfin. Sport or bait is there to main values. If you catch them but dont want them ill gladly take them off your hands for shark bait.
Surf what kind of Jig were you throwing at them just curious??

I made a Bonita poke and it was very good. I also regularly make tuna salad with them.
The trick is to bleed and ice them directly like any tuna and then let the loins sit on a paper towel in the fridge overnight to suck any extra blood off
The trick is knowing whether you have a Little Tunny or a true Bonito, one is good, the other (IMHO) is cat food.
Most people catch false albacore and call them bonito. Albacore is common in canned tuna. Either way, if I catch them, they are coming home and made into strips, and vacuum sealed to be used in replacement of ballyhoo or to use along with ballyhoo. They make EXCELLENT sea witch bait.
I always learned the deep water fish was a Bonito and the one caught near shore and only used for bait was a false albacore or we called them “Bonita” or Little Tunny.
