what fly pattern would you use???

If you could only take 2 fly patterns with you to chase tails in the grass what would they be? Crab pattern? Shrimp? Copper? etc…

And would you ever spray some YUM attractant or something like that for some scent enhacement on the actual fly?
I’ve seen the reds turn and sniff out crab chunks and I wonder if you spray a little something on there if that would help not having to cast right on top of the red to avoid the spook factor better…

As I get more into this I want to have some confidence that I’m using a consistent pattern that others have had success with so I don’t have to re-tie every 20 minutes.

Copperhead crab and maybe a spoon fly for over the counter flies. As far as scent, we’ve already covered that in another post on page 3. Catch a red on a proven fly then tie on a different pattern and experiment a little. Gives you a good excuse to go buy a couple of other patterns to add to the flybox plus catching one on something different is fulfilling. Kind of like when I used a chc to catch surf snook in Florida. Everyone uses white, I just wanted to be different and it worked.

Crab pattern- Merkin or Borski. No offense SC, but a spoon fly is cheating. And they are pain to toss in the wind.

In so far as scent goes, I think it is best to get the human off of the fly. When I am walking a flat I will take the fly and cram it in the mud. I don’t know if it gets all the people juice (not man chowder) off of it, but it makes for a nice mud trail when you strip the fly. If you have sunblock on, it will probably at least mask that scent a bit too.

I threw that in there because that’s what I caught my first one on so I thought a little loyalty was in order.

merkinish, kwanlike toad. Natural or rootbeer orange.

But once again, if you present any good looking critter correctly and make it look like food they will take it to the colon.

What do you think about these two? I’ve had them but never fished them. Maybe next time down will use them exclusively.

A spoonfly is cheating but it’s all right to use a 100% synthetic copperhead? Please explain the difference.

I’d much rather cast a spoonfly than any type of clouser.

Whatchoo talkin bout Willis? The Merkin and Borski are spun hair. I ain’t never used no copperhead. Synthetics, yes. Used a spoonfly, yes. I caught my first red on one. They just don’t fly right. That is the difference.

SC, that one on the left looks tasty. I’d eat it.

im with you PB. i dont understand why one shape of mylar is taboo and the other is the bomb. maybe if you are talking about glueing a fake nail to a hook you are manufacturing and not tying. if i make a spoon out of a feather is that ok if i epoxy it?

I think it has more to do with the lack of tying involved…

that and a spoon is directly tied to immitate a lure used by bait chunkers, not something natural in the water. Just putting the other side of the argument out there.

In the grass I throw a Copperhead Crab or a bead chain Mud Minnow… if they won’t eat that, their either dead or fasting.

Any pix of your bead chain mud minnow? Sounds nice, but I am having trouble visualizing it.

Roger, dem look tasty! I like the one on the left best. does it have a keel weight?

All it’s got are the little dumbell eyes for weight. I added the flouro weed guards since they didn’t come tied already. Can’t wait to use them although I should have tried them before now.

Us fly fisherman are a funny bunch. We will use the most high tech graphite/carbon/boron scientifically tapered rod with the latest high grade aluminum reel w/ a sealed enclosed carbon fiber drag and the most advance high floating, aircell, sharkskin fly line…but then turn around and say using a spoon fly is beneath them.

I haven’t thrown a spoon fly in a long time but I certainly would if I thought it was the best fly for the situation.

I did not say it was beneath me, I said it was cheating. I even said I caught my first red on the fly on one above.

It is called flyfishing, not spoonfishing.
