I am coming to the Hilton Head area next week and will be bringing the fly rods. What flies do I need to tie to help ensure I get a bite:smiley:?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Crab and shrimp patterns. Merkins. Might want to try a fly called a Carolina Critter.
Might want to try wading the 18th hole flat at Sea Pines at high tide.
Yes to the crabs and shrimp but NEVER leave home without a fist full of clousers and at least an M4 or two

Thanks. Any particular colors? What is an m4?
Far better it is to dare mighty things to win glorious triumphs even though checkered with failure, than to take ranks with those poor spirits who never enjoy much nor suffer much because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.
M4 is Mad Mikes Mud Minnow… the rabbit fur makes uber deadly…

Call mike at charleston angler and get some mad mike crabs. If you order m4’s, get weed guards on them.

Nikon you said $20 for a copperhead crab ??? I got one for $3.95, or were you referring to all that he needs … I tried tying the copperhead crab … I was ready to go crazy … I should tie more often
Given what I could find this is the first attempt at the M4. I hope it is close.

nu2salt, it looks pretty good. If you know how to tie weed guards, you might want one or two with guards, too. Another option would be lead eyes instead of bead chain. But… those look fine.

Thanks for the input and the advice. I will give it a go in the morning.

That one looks a little easier to tie:wink:
How do you like that NorVise?

All I had to go by was a little picture on the char. angler website and a helpful pm. I will try the one I tied and see what happens. Heck I may just have created a new fish catching fly.

I love my NorVise. It’s very solid and linear, makes tying easy. You are right about the materials. Less is usually better, especially in windy conditions. I have a similar fly that I tie (see below) that’s heavier, but I use the lighter one more. Both of these are great Redfish flies for this time of year - quick & easy to tie. These are the “working man’s fly.” Not artistic or fancy but will catch Reds. Did you have any luck fishing today?

I just stumbled across this thread…
That version of the M4 doesn’t look too bad really, I usually tie the rubber legs into the tail with flashabou, and krystal flash… then I use copper tinsel flash and palmer brown Schlappen up through it…
I agree with simplicity, and in the grand scheme of things my flies are VERY simple creations… I just like materials that speak for themselves without much manipulation from the angler… therefore you will see alot of rabbit, marabou, schlappen, and floating rubber legs incorporated in my flies… this means I don’t have to move them much to make them come alive in front of a fish…
I very rarely throw the M4 at tailers, I leave that job for the copperhead crab… but put it out in the open on low tides and fish will trip over themselves to get to it… And you did well to tie it with the bead chain. The traditional pattern has lead eyes, but I only use that in certain cercumstances… more often you will see me tie it with the bead chain as well…
Good luck out there…
