Over the past few trips I have found two areas were about 5-10 different schools of reds push up the bank chasing mullet as the tides going out. Now they are no match for the spook jr. but i’ve also thrown topwater flies at them. Deer hair mullet, gurglers, and poppers and all they do is pass by them. So I decided to try clousers in a bunch of different colors and sizes with only one fish showing very limited interest. Both areas are mud flats and about a foot of water. They would pass up my best casts and move on up. My buddy would put a spook in front of them and they would gobble it up. Any suggestions on getting these fly hating fish to bite?
try getting your hands on a wool head in mullet colors. My next choice would be a siliskin mullet or shad. Either one will give a better profile than a deer hair.
next choice would be a small weighted shrimp. skip the top water and put it on the bottom in front of their nose.

are the fish seeing you (or poler) in the background when you are fishing your fly?? sometimes when a surface fly is used, the fish focus up at it and see a human in the background. not good. a big bushy seaducer suspended, twitching, in their face should do the trick. or as TB says a small shrimp or crab on bottom rarely get refused…

im thinking it is the spook action which i dont know how to impart to a fly. Colt, did you get a fly to walk the dog? i been trying to think but nothing happens. got a big blue but not on fly where we tried. lemme know when you can schedule my next lesson.
found a hairy spook with tying instructions. search spook fly. http://www.flyfishinsalt.com/techniques/fly-tying-bench/the-hairy-spook-1000068046.html
it is a tube fly as Colt and i had speculated. there is another one tyed with spun polar fibre. doesnt sound like fun but it looked ok.
gonna try the tube.
Thanks fellas. I dont think the fish are seeing us. They never change speeds or direction. My buddy gives me one and I mean one shot with the fly before he has to let go with the spook. And they hammer it. Its a good 60 ft cast at the closest.

I’ve had a lot of luck with a #2 muddler. The fly floats just under the surface so it stays free from shells and snags. cast it right up against the bank ahead of the reds and ease it out in front of them as they pass. It has worked for me.
