What is Chirp and is it better than DI/SI for inshore fishing?
Wider coverage and more detail. I don’t use my fish finder for inshore. I fish too shallow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMoaTHfiX10
CHIRP at first only was referred to as a fish finding technology…but now it also is incorporated into the down and side scan.
1)Traditional sonar is often referred to as "tone burst…or single burst sonar as it fires one single pulse at the selected frequency.
- CHIRP (Compressed High Intensity Radar Pulse) also called Swept frequency…and sometimes called Broadband CHIRP.
This technology has been on the market for several years and is generally accepted as the future of recreational sonar as it has many advantages.
A CHIRP system fires a band of pulses that sweep from one end of the selected band to the other…many pulses each at a different frequency and ranging thru varying cone angles .
Recreational sonars come in many variations…they can look only for fish, or they can look for hard targets such as bottom and structure…or they can do both.
Hard target capability can be either down scan or side scan …or even better…both down and side at the same time.
Designed specifically for hard target detail… this system is normally limited to a slower boat speed and shallow depths…depth down to an average of 150’ to 200’ is considered most common.
Traditional sonar relies on just one or two different frequencies to provide all the information to the processor, which limits the level of detail that can be produced.
Instead, the CHIRP sonar generates an image using a wider range of frequencies, which allows the processor to produce a much more accurate and detailed sonar image of fish, structure, or the bottom.
For freshwater use, 200 kHz is the most commonly used frequency with traditional 2D sonar. Without CHIRP, it would produce continuous pulses at 200 kHz. With CHIRP technology, the system will shoot one pulse at 160 kHz, then the next at 161 kHz, then 162 kHz, and all the way up to 200 kHz, and then it would start over.
Downscan/Side scan now comes in with either traditional sonar technology or with CHIRP technology.
So you can use a CHIRP (or traditional sonar) system t
Thanks. Bowhunter. for a complete and understandable explanation. I appreciate your taking the time.

Dang, just dang, Bowhunter! Now, can you explain the meaning of life, or better yet, what do women want:question: All kidding aside, that was an excellent explanation of CHIRP!
Not a problem, Bob. I understand that many folks are confused by it, just don’t understand the technology, and/or have misconceptions or perceptions of it. I certainly don’t know it all, but I do have a decent understanding (at least of how the technology works). So if I can help clear some things up for people, I’m more than happy to do it.
One thing about myself is that I rarely use SI, just DI. I think that SI is a better tool for shallow water fishermen (I.E. bass fisherman) who need to see what is to the side of their boat. I’m more interested in what’s below me, but that’s just me.

Easy, if I knew what women wanted, I’d be a gadzillionare.

If you have SI, and you fish shallow water, you’re definitely missing out. SI is far more effective in shallow water than in deep water.
I can’t tell you how many oyster beds, drop offs, holes/pockets, current breaks I’ve found because of my SI. Without it, I would’ve never known they were there.
God bless the “ignore” function.
Great explanation! I always wanted to know the difference so thanks!
On a more simpler question…How do you increase the font size on a Lowrance??? I wear glasses now and its a PAIN to be riding up the Wando and not be able to see the depth…I cannot find any options to increase font size but surely its there somewhere?

HDS Gen2? It is certainly there, I can’t remember exactly how I did it but it is on the page where you move the ‘icons’ around (like temp, speed and depth) you zoom in and out on them to your preferred size. I will try on my unit this afternoon and see if I can do it again.

press menu
scroll to settings, press enter
scroll up to page, press enter or right on the D pad
select edit data over lay
use zoom buttons on each icon to preferred size
when finished back out and save changes
Hope this helps! Let me know.
Edit; you will have to do this on each page, for instance, a sonar only page and a chart\sonar split screen page each will need their icons adjusted. This is also where you can add cool icons such as DC voltage and others

Very good explanation > I fish the h-bird hd-di-si and would not trade it for any other i’ve seen for the money , and yes ,after a learning curve you can id fish , bait balls , structure ect at quite a distance
off to either side…
