What is on my fish finder? Bushy Park, freshwater.

Saw these guys all day long. They were always suspended at 18-26’, in water that was 35-40’ deep (between the two water intake structures near the center)

I suspected they might be panfish of some sort, but they would NOT take minnows suspended under slip-bobbers or jigged with jig head. Tried a sabiki, nothing.

They traveled around a lot and didn’t stay in one spot for long. If I found a school like the one in the pic below while I was sitting still, they would disappear quickly.

My suspicion is that they are river mullet since they wouldn’t take a hook. Look at how big they are showing up on the fish finder. Normally when i see stuff like this, I am pulling up larger whiting or hand-sized pinfish.

School of Striper? They were at that same depth at lake moultrie the other day in 35 feet of water.

Personally, first thing I would do is turn the fish symbols off on your sounder. I hate my unit telling me there are fish under the boat when it might just be weeds or …

Anyway, you said these would move off - schools of gizzard shad? Mullet is possible. Gar? They usually don’t move that fast, but they are big…

Try dropping a great big cast net on them and see.

At the landing I could see crappie or sunfish probably 9 to 10 inches at least with maybe a bass because there was one large fish over 16 inches for sure with them and they were swimming from about two to five foot and would swim right up to my bait (all types) that had just a mosquito hook and would look but not bite. Caught 1 crappie, 1 pickerel, 1 eel and 2 sun fish and missed a big fish on a sunfish head, and had one other hit that was real fast and short.
