Learning Saltwater fishing, and loving it! Several times last summer, my kids and I heard “frying” or “clicking” sounds coming thru the hull of my boat. I incorrectly assumed heat expansion initially, but it was very noticable, and lasted for quite some time. Any ideas? Was it baitfish? We were in 20-30 feet of water.

Many, many times. It’s a good indication that it’s time to throw the net:wink:

Not likely to hear that sonar inside the boat, and if you do it will be on a regular frequency, a couple of clicks a second. This sound is more like grease frying in a pan. Almost a sizzle. Aluminum will transmit it through the hull. You won’t hear it in fiberglass unless it has a very thin skin and no foam in it.

Its all the little crustaceans (like snapping shrimp) on an oyster reef or some type of structure below you. When you dive in low viz a lot of times you will hear the reef itself before ever seeing it. Pretty crazy how much noise those little dudes can make!! Stick your head in the water next time you will hear it a lot better.
Yep, another thing my Dad taught me a long time ago. Turn off the stereo and listen to what the river is telling you. One of the reasons my boat doesn’t have a stereo.
