Jerk up and let lure fall. Keep rod tip up on fall and reel in the slack on the fall. 90%+ of the time you will get struck on the fall. Manage the slack in your line. Vary the speed, amount of jerk, and cadence till you find what they want that day. Colder, slower. Make sure your near the bottom. Many people fish too fast. I often find myself going too fast trying to cover water
As above, I’d also like to add that it’s not like you make the same exact motions every time. You need to get a feel for what your lure is doing underwater. For instance, it behaves very different in current vs no current wind vs no wind acting on your line.
X2 on slower as the water gets colder. In deep bends in larger creeks when the tide begins to slow down, try throwing up on the ledge. Then drop the jig off the ledge with little tugs, keeping the line tight. Hits often come as the jig reaches the bottom just off the ledge.
Also, try 10# test line or less for trout jigging in clear water. New 10# is plenty strong. Set your drag light in case Mr. Red bites!
