What is the problem??

.

Seems to be rampant these days. I told my son that if you just do what you tell people you are going to do, you are ahead of about 90% of your competition. Some folks tell people what they think they want to hear even if they know that they cannot follow through.

Hopefully after strike 3, your luck will improve.

I called a buddy of mine in Columbia and gave him a general description of what you asked for on here, but it is to far away.

Good luck MH,
NN

Sign of the times. Many of these small “businessmen” are good at their craft but terrible at running a business. I went through the same thing years ago when we built our house. They would come by, look at what you wanted done and then you’d never hear from them again or, schedule a date/time to come by then not show up. It is a wonder people like that stay in business.

Andy I have told my son the same thing. I agree 100%. Sorry about your troubles mhebbard… Frustrating

Wish I lived closer to you. I can do all of what you need, but just too far to travel.

I just went through the same thing. Screen porch to sunroom conversion. I called at least 6-8 different contractors. Only 2 responded back. One was $35k (in my opinion way over price for the scope of work being asked to do), the other never returned my calls or email after coming out to see the project. Pretty simple conversion (only 160 sqft), as I already had 3 walls, floor, and roof. Needed to install exterior wall, windows, and doors and all finish work.

Needless to say, I ended up doing the work myself and saved $21k!

I will say for the HVAC contractor and the landscaper for my backyard?the best response I had after getting several no calls or no shows was to join Angieslist. As soon as I called a company or emailed them and said I received their name through Angieslist?.I received very good customer service.

If you have a certain skill set (electrical, HVAC, plumbing, etc), you show up when you say you’re going to, and you are honest, you can make a really good living. Half of the contractors out there are just trying to screw you.

I’ll identify myself as the delinquent cabinet guy, and he is 100% right that I dropped the ball on him. I do apologize for that. The reason is a combination of a handful of things that have prevented me from doing ANY work outside my normal 40 (which is also cabinetry)…particularly a 2-month sinus infection that wouldn’t budge… but none of them are good excuses for forgetting to contact you to let you know that I was unable to pursue anything other than my 40hr job. It was definitely a mistake, but not an acceptable one. I am sorry man!

Saying “I am offended” is telling everyone else that you cannot control your own emotions, and thus you need everyone else to do it for you.

I accept your apology and I appreciate your honesty - but my intention was never to call you or your business out specifically. While noble, I think you should feel free to remove the post to protect your interests. Hope you feel better soon!

My main frustration is that I don’t know with these other guys if I am doing something wrong- Everyone is allowed to have bad days and fall-outs, but FOUR in a row had me worried that I was approaching these in the wrong way or doing something to make these folks not want to work for me. I had previously thought that a reference/recommendation and mentioning the friend who referred business would be the best bet for good customer service, but it doesn’t look that way any more.

Redfish Matt…you just moved up another notch! That’s awesome that you took the time to say you dropped the ball and was sorry.

I know you had no interest in naming me specifically. I just flat made a mistake, there are two folks on this site (both of you are reading this) that contacted me at the exact same time. I kept a material cut list for your stuff in the same folder, which I “lost” (it got filed away somewhere I haven’t found yet) at the same time I got hit with sinus infections. Thus, I dropped the ball on both of you guys.

No need for me to remove my post , both of you deserved better than to be forgotten. I have only done a trifle of carpentry apart from my Mon-Fri job since then, just haven’t had time and energy.

I actually am feeling just fine now, thanks.

I will say this regarding contractors that no-show. Sure, it can be an error on their part. Or, it could be that they think they just have bigger fish to fry. Right now, the construction industry is quite active(depending on your market), and in terms of profit, a lot of contractors are far more interested in trolling for wahoo than fishing for bluegill. Unfortunately, that means guys with jobs that are under a couple thousand get the cold shoulder. But, come times of bad economy, those $1-2K jobs suddenly start being very attractive. The law of supply/demand at work, not that I agree with it.

You always hear about people getting screwed about contractors…but hardly ever about contractors getting screwed by people. Don’t hand over all the money up front and once the job is done pay what you agreed to pay. If you made changes, understand those weren’t in the original agreement. Look for a quality job instead of a cheap price. Give me a handful of your money and I’ll test it to make sure it’s good!

I co-own a flooring company in the Lowcountry and we have a perfect rating on Angie’s List. We have a policy of contacting customers within five minutes of receiving an Angie’s List lead. Give me a call when you’re ready, Penny. I’ll come down from Charlotte to personally handle the job…

I am compelled to disclose that I have heard from another of the contractors and that he also has a very good reason for not being available-

So - at this point, best case scenario is that the plumbers are sketchy and for the other two maybe I am a bad luck charm.

Scheduled for tomorrow PM - keep your fingers crossed for me pls
