There ain’t many marsh critters around here that I haven’t seen, but this is a new one to me. Caught in a mud minnow trap in GA. Looks like a cross between a shrimp and lobster with long skinny arms. Anybody know?

I forgot the name but it will slice you like a razor blade.
big dog
Not a mantis shrimp. It looks more like a freshwater prawn to me.
looks like a pistol shrimp
I think i’ve seen one before but didn’t think much of it. Looks like a “Long Clawed River Prawn” but they’re supposedly from south of the border (not the one @ NC/SC border) and freshwater.

Definitely NOT a mantis shrimp.
It does look like a pic I saw about a year ago warning about an invasive specie that was being raised coastally and was suspected to have been accidentally introduced into our waters.
If you still have it, you may want to give a call to the DNR. As for the actual specie, I can’t say, I don’t remember what the “thing” I read said, but RedTide’s suggestion sounds about right.

I had some remains of one in my minnow trap a couple weeks ago up the Ashley. Definitely a type of freshwater prawn.

It is a freshwater shrimp they live in freshwater but their eggs and larvae must be in low salinity water to hatch and survive. This species, Macrobrachium ohioni, is native to SC and this specimen is a Male. The wildlife department experimented with raising the much larger non native species, rosenbergii, in ponds in the late 1970’s early 80’s
I eat 'em every time I go to China - River prawn. Pretty tasty. Mantis shrimp are good eats too.
Boat drinks, Waitress I need 2 more boat drinks!
Great info hungryneck, that’s exactly what it is. Thanks!

That is called the "Ohio " shrimp. A fresh and low salinity prawn.
