What is your favorite 50 hp outboard

I need to repower a 15 foot fiberglass skiff and have been looking around. Does anybody know anything about Tohatsu? Has anybody had much luck buying off ebay? Just curious. Thanks in advance.

My favorite 50 would be a 2 stroke Yamaha, but they don’t make them anymore. Tohatsu makes a fine engine. They been building engines for Mercury for years.

What’s the hull rated for?

If the boat will take more HP, I would always go to the top horse power for a given engine block. For instance, on the mercurymarine.com, they show the weight for the 50hp EFI and 60hp EFI as identical. I bet the only difference is in the fuel system. If the boat is rated to carry 60, I’d do the 60.

DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT!!!
The harder you work, the luckier you’ll get.

Tohotsu is the oldest outboard manufacture in the world, they have built most of the under 15 hp engine for just about everyone regardless of what name is on it. I don’t know if there is a local dealer for them around here though. If your are considering fourstroke, for a while both the merc and Yamaha use the same Chinese manufactured powerhead on each ones mid section, so not much difference in power heads. Not sure on the newer stuff. Keep in mind, carb four strokes can get very expensive if they need carb work. The best motor I’ve ever owned was a Merc 60(same as a 50) bigfoot two stroke on my old 14 McKee. It was the smoothest idling two stroke I’ve ever run, had plenty of power, didn’t burn much fuel or oil. never gave me any issue. i hate I sold that boat just because I sold the motor with it
