Hit the woods with my youngen this morning and got set up on a boss gobbler who’s roosting quarters had been given away a few days ago. Slipped in under the cover of darkness and got set up at 75 yards from his tree. The birds started gobbling at 6:10 and by 6:20 a couple hens bailed out the tree as well as the boss and just about clipped us with their wings. Landed where we could not get turned and position for the shot without getting busted and watched them go out of sight. What the…get another bird to come in around 9:45 in a different setup silent and solo. Ah ha I thought as the bird sat in plain view at 35 yards for over 40 minutes daring her to kill him. Can’t explain what I witnessed between pure emotion and tears but she would not pull the trigger on what would be her first bird and this limb hanger just lived the luckiest moment of his life!!! Had to tell my youngen that I was so proud of her with her choosing this bird and location to hunt and how we did everything right and if she didn’t want to harvest him then I was fine with that and there will be another day to try again. Oh well back at being an understanding dad and keeping it real - Youngen Style!
