I’ve got some TLD 25’s that are spooled with 40lb mono from my snapper days on the gulf. I know alot of people up here sailfish with TLD 25’s. What line do you all suggest I spool these reels with?
Also, I have some tyrnos 30II’s. What do you all suggest I spool those with? Thanks for the help.
We put 40 on ours too. That seems to work well, it has caught sails, a couple whites and a blue already. It’s fun using that lighter tackle they are our hottest setup !

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

“Top shots” are usually referring to braid backing and mono on top for shock absorbing. You’re probably thinking of wind-on leaders (no snap swivel–can reel all the way up to the hook). A lot of people use these–personally I prefer a combination. Wind-ons on the rigs that I always pull the same baits, and snap swivels on the others for versatility and speed of unhooking fish and putting bait back in the water.
bread, I should have clarified. I know what a top shot is. I meant, as in an alternative. Do people use spectra or something as a backing and then top shot it as to avoid respooling the entire reels up here? A lot of folks on the gulf do it so you don’t have to respool the entire reel all the time, you can just replace the top shot once the mono has been used and is most likely stretched as it saves time and money. I would assume with the large volume of sailfish and the number of dolphin coming through that the lines get stretched pretty good quickly and need to be changed out frequently.
Oh gotcha I like straight up mono on all my reels close to the boat & braid/top shot on the way back. Just personal preference. I buy a big spool of mono and respool my reels every winter.
