What size chip

Do you recommend using in a GoPro 3+? The book says use a card with a class 10 speed rating. Anyone use something that will work better?

Class 10 or UHS Class 1 are what you need. Just means the card has a fast enough rated write speed to handle full HD video. With regards to card capacity, refer to the GoPro site to decide how much recording time you need.

These are recording times for a 32GB card:

The Sandisk Ultra MicroSD cards work well and are easy to find. They can be found on Amazon for decent prices, or you can buy them from Target and have them match the price Amazon (yes, they will do this).

Thanks capntang! When it comes to this stuff, I ask:wink:

With a 16Gb card I always ran out of battery before I ran out of memory. I used to get 1 1/2 to 2 hours of continuous recoding before the battery was done for the day.

Boat drinks, Waitress I need 2 more boat drinks!

That is very true. The batteries are awful. It’s easier to charge a battery than dump a data card while on the go, though.

I used a GoPro to record our sails between islands for New Year’s vacation this year. One week on the boat meant I was often without AC power. Breaking out a laptop was a pain and took too much time. I was able to charge the batteries from a DC outlet, and a 64GB card meant I only had to dump the card once for the entire trip.

I also carried a 12000mAh portable USB power source which allowed me to charge the GoPro batteries (and cell and still camera) while away from the boat. Something like this:

Why dump the card on the trip? Why not just have multiple cards? And multiple batteries for that matter?

I would rather have 2 x 16GB cards than 1 32 for redundancy. If the card got toasted, at least I still have half my images\videos…

Because keeping up with multiple MicroSD cards while race-sailing a 40 foot boat for a week wasn’t something I wanted to bother with on that particular trip.

I would normally agree with you, though. It was a trade-off.

Sure. I am just speaking in general. I have a pelican case on the boat that I keep stuff like that in. The chips have numbers on them with permanent marker (1, 2, 3). It takes about 4.217 seconds to switch cards.

I would always opt for multiple cards. Things get lost. People will get more upset about losing a 64GB card over a 16GB card. I like to spread out my risk a bit.

I carry a kite with a key tied to it and fly it into thunderstorms...

Thanks again capntang! That’s not a bad price for that charger!

That's what I do as well!

Not that you plan on getting it wet but, I just bought 2 class 10, 16Gb cards that are waterproof, magnet proof and crush proof for around $12.00 on ebay.

Yeah DF, I never plan on getting my sunglasses wet either[:0]

It takes me 4 batteries in a normal day of fishing. One 32Gb is enough. I do a lot of short videos, i.e… stop and start, 5-7 minutes at a time. When done, I can review the short clips before downloading them and only chose the ones that have actual cool stuff in them. I rename them as I do this to names like (TWAJ 313). Then when going to clip and make a movie I still have to download the whole 5-7 minutes to Movie Maker but can skip right to the “Top Water AJ’s at 3:13” and cut all the rest. The files get real big and load up your computer hard drive after a few hundred videos. Downloading and clipping a 60 minute stretch of video is very time consuming.

I always get a kick out of that kind of marketing for MicroSD cards.

They’re all fully encapsulated (water resistant as long as they aren’t used while wet, though the contacts can still corrode), solid state and not magnetic, and pretty resistant to crushing (as long as they’re flat and aren’t crushed on an edge).

I’d be wary of no-name cheap memory from ebay. I use sandisk extreme 32gb cards, quality 64gb class 10 is pricey vs 32gb. I don’t feel 16gb is enough space for 3 & 3+ cameras, especially as I shoot alot in the higher frame rate settings, 1080p @ 60fps minimum, but I use 720p @ 120fps alot as well. I do still use 16gb SD in my old HD Hero, however.

Check out wasabi power replacement batteries/chargers on Amazon. 2 batteries plus charger for $24 or so. As with most chinese batteries, they don’t quite live up to the actual rating (wasabi batterys 1200mAh as opposed to GoPro’s 1050mAh) but have comparable runtime to factory batteries. Lots of Gopro’ers out there using them…

These are not no name, they’re Samsung. I have used these before and had good luck with them. Had good luck with Sandisk as well.
