I have gotten a couple of new reels over the last few months and want to add a Penn Sargus to my collection. As far as you “experts” are concerned, what size is a good inshore size? I am debating the SG3000 which is rated for 8 lb. and the SG4000 which is rated for 10 lb. I will be using braid so I know I can go a good bit higher on test rating without sacrificing amount of line n the reel.
I battled a 10lbs black drum at the jetties on a Sargus 2000 with 15lbs braid…and won! it was about a 10 min fight with quite a few runs involved. I love the Sargus look and design and would love to add a 4000 to my arsenal.

Cool, so you think I should go with the 4000 over the 3000? I know it is not a real expensive reel to some people but I usually fish with crap so this is a pretty nice reel to me and I want to get the best all around.
I hear ya man…I used to buy crap and am now realizing that if I put a little more money in it and take care of it (not that I trashed cheaper stuff) that it is worth the investment. if you are mainly inshore with an occasional trip to the jetties I would think the 3000 would be enough…just my opinion though. chat with one of the fine fellas at Charleston Angler or Haddrell’s and see what they say. I’d be interested to hear.

Thanks Bonzo. I got a Shimano Symetre for Christmas and bought a Sedona (wasn’t in the market but got it for 1/2 retail so what the heck) but I like the looks of the Sargus and it is affordable.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

I have two Sargus 3000s with ~15lb braid and a Sargus 4000 with ~20 lb braid. I use the 3000s for EVERYTHING, but if I’m targeting big rays or something else that will give a solid pull, I’ll break out the 4000.

Both the 3000 and 4000 should be very close when it comes to drag capabilty. With braid line capacity doesn’t matter as much. 15 to 20# braid will work very well with that size of reels. I have a Shimano Saragosa 4000 that has 30# PP, but I use that mainly for fishing bait in areas of structure with 10+ pounds of drag. I would choose whatever size feels the most balanced on the rod you are going to use.
