What Size Trolling Motor?

A friend is buying a new Tracker 190TX (aluminum) with a 115 Merc on it. He wants a trolling motor and is looking at the Motor guide Pinpoint but not sure what thrust. MG recommends a minimum 40 lb. He was thinking a 55 lb 12 volt motor. Any thoughts or input?

Have had many boats and trolling motors . My advice would be an 80lb thrust . I have a 18ft flats boat and some times in the wind its not enough. :sunglasses:

I have an 80lb/24v MinnKota on a 17’CC and it is a pretty good fit. I would go larger on a 19’ boat.

He’s gonna need at least 70lbs, but would recommend 80. I know it’s an aluminum boat, but it’s still heavy and a 12v system just won’t cut it.

I agree with 70 or 80.

I just got a 36v 112lbs trolling motor put on my boat.
I was waffling between 80lbs and 112lbs (24v vs 36v), I ended up going with the 112lbs because people seemed to agree that you should err on the side of overkill vs having too little power.
I’ve only been able to play around with the trolling motor for about 45 minutes…it held me steady at Grillage without much(any) drama (not a light current, but definitely not the worst current I’ve seen at Grillage…not much wind). I also played around with it a little in the ICW. It works great, but I’m glad I didn’t go with 80lbs because I’m not sure that would be enough…point being, go with the 80lbs

Oops, my bad, forgot to mention freshwater use only. It seems that would make a difference?

Not really. Would be a little cheaper than the saltwater version, but he still needs more than just a 55 lb trolling motor. If the wind gets up or he tries to fish in a river with some decent current, that 12v system isn’t going to be enough.

I think you would be making a large mistake not going with at least an 80! I pilot if you can afford it. Will be happy for a long time!

I’ve been fishing for a lot of years and I’ve never heard anyone say I wish I had less power on my trolling motor. Go with atleast an 80. Also, from what I’ve seen, 24 volt systems will usually run longer per charge than 12 volts will. The I pilot with spot lock is the best I’ve seen.
