What the ???

Just picked up a 92 Toyota 4runner a month ago or so. Runs pretty good, considering 194000 miles . Problem is its tried to overheat a couple times, on just short runs. Couple of weeks ago, I took it from Goose Crrek to Columbia and back with no problems. I changed the thermostat after it happened the first time with a fail open, ran it a few times, then it did it to me again. Hence the wt???. Any advice Greatly appreciated.

Btw oil looks okay, no milky or foamy oil, the antifreeze looked okay too. The radiator looks new, and the thermostat looked new when I changed it. It’s a 3.0 v6 SR5 4x4.

Fan clutch. Sounds like its just free spinning and not turning enough at low speed.

Check the ground wire on the battery. The little wire going to the panel.I bought a pickup that nobody could fix and that was the problem . Make sure it is really getting hot. my .02

Could be gunk in water jacket of the block. On thos motors if the antifreeze didn’t get changed it can clog up the block and overheat. Best way to check is pull the head or find a water jacket bolt, sensor, etc. towards the back of the block and peak inside.

That’s a lot of miles on a 3.0 if it hasn’t ever been rebuilt or replaced.

Not something I know much about, but I would wonder if there is a new radiator if it was not replaced to fix the problem you are having. I know they used to flow test a radiator when replaced in the days where I could open the hood and understand what I was looking at. Not sure if that is still something they do or not.

can also be as simple as the radiator not filled properly. My car has an air bleed screw up high near the heater core to get the air out

Boat drinks, Waitress I need 2 more boat drinks!

What gets me is that it has only happened twice, on short trips. But did fine on other short trips. The heater isn’t working hardly at all. The problem shows up after messing with the temp lever in the dash.

Could be a bad water pump. Have you pulled that to see if it is not in free spin?

Haven’t done anything else to it since changing t.stat. Heading back up to Va tomorrow early am. Probably gonna mess with it next weekend. I appreciate the input.

Agreed with the possibility of the fan not operating properly, esp if it’s overheating at low speeds/idle.

You may also want to replace the coolant temperature sensor. It’s possible it’s not actually overheating, but the sensor is going bad. I’ve personally only had them fail in the “no data/no temperature reading at all” sort of failure, but I suppose it’s possible for it to get a false high.

If your heater isn’t working at all, then either 1) you have a malfunctioning valve for the heater core (had that happen on a 1985 Cutlass) 2) Or your heater core has a plugged inlet or outlet. Or 3) you have a MAJOR plug somewhere that is causing both the intermittent overheating and the loss of a heater.

Personally I’d start with changing the coolant temp sensor if that is an affordable part, and then checking the heater control valve if you have one (I don’t know if your truck has one or not).
