What to do with old slot for radio?

I’m switching from a “normal” radio to a gauge style receiver. I’ve been trying to think of what to re-purpose the cutout already in my console for the old radio. The opening is about 7" x 12" x 2". I don’t want to put a lot of money into anything. My first thought was to make a small storage compartment using some “moldable” plastic sheets, but not sure how sturdy it would be.

If anyone has any creative uses or ideas please share. I’m sure someone else has re-purposed a former radio cutout before. Thanks in advance for ideas and help.

7x12x2?

Guessing that’s. Lxdxh

After being released, a lot of fish die, but a lot of them live also.

Maybe something like this?

Yes, 7 x 12 is the main opening…didn’t want to go much deeper than 12"

Check out a plastic trash can at the dime store, sure you can find something close, mabe a little bigger and epoxie it to the inside

There’s a website - I forget the name- where you can order custom cut pieces of starboard. We took out an old fish finder and just put a piece of starboard over it. It’s not terribly expensive either.

Lots of people install a second VHF radio.

What boat is this? We might need to see a picture of the console.

I have some scrap starboard to cover the hole if that is your plan.

I just had similar situation on same boat and similar location. First, I really like the option that Capt Fritz posted. My situation - I did away with stereo and installed a Bluetooth amp inside the console. I cut a piece of starboard to go over the radio hole (screwed into the same holes the radio did). The amp I installed has a controller that I mounted on the starboard and I also bought and installed a dual USB/aux receptacle that is connected to the amp as well allowing for plenty of connection options - the USB port will charge the phone also.

I can design and print something on my 3D printer if you need something custom. Probably $50 - $60 for the whole deal.
