I took my boat to a mechanic in Eutawville three weeks ago. He still hasn’t gotten around to even looking at it and I don’t know what to do next. It went something like this: I went on a Friday and he said bring it in Tuesday and he’ll look at it. I took it in on Tuesday and he said he would look at it on Thursday. I called Friday and he said he would look at it next Tuesday. I went on Wednesday and he said he would check it out on Friday. I stopped by yesterday and he said he would look at it Monday. I know the warm weather has caused a big increase in people wanting their boats worked on and this guy came highly recommended. I don’t want to be too pushy and make him mad but I also kind of feel like I’m being ignored because I’m not one of his regular clients. Any suggestions?

simple; pick up your boat and take it to somebody else who will shoot straight with you.

I’d hook it up and take it somewhere else. If it takes a month, so be it, just tell me it will take a month to begin with.

I agree that if I had taken it in and been told he was busy and it may be a few weeks I would have been ok with that. I really appreciate the replies.

I believe I know who your referring to and I would pick it up and carry it somewhere else. He does great work at a good price but you better take it to him in October if you want it back by March. Carry it to Black River Marine in Orangeburg, Andy and Jason will have you rolling in no time.

finally got my boat back after almost three months. The mechanic couldn’t find the problem. Said the motor tested good and he replaced the bearing at the bottom of the powerhead and said he checked the lower unit and couldn’t find anything wrong. I took it out and the high pitched whistle still comes from the motor as soon as it gets to 20mph, continues at higher speeds, and goes away instantly when it gets below 20mph. Probably gonna start saving up some money and be stuck using my johnboat until the busy summer season ends and I can get someone else to take a look.

What kind of motor is it ?? Could be a belt or pulley !!

2003 Mercury 90hp 2 stroke. No alarms on engine, the alarms are under the dash and do not go off. Runs like it was new but that high pitched whistle is annoying and I fear a sign of future bigger problems

Probably need to take one of his mechanics out fishing so he can hear it. Might not show up in a test tank.

the mechanic took it out on the lake, heard the noise, guessed at the cause and was wrong and couldn’t figure it out and gave up

get up with Thomas Tyler in Scranton, he’s semi retired, so it still might take a while, but he’s very good and knows those motors better than anyone
