What was it???

Heading towards our fishing spot i noticed something big jump out of the water. It was all black with no fins.It came up 3 times about half way out of the water. It looked strange.i have never seen anything like it before.Pat also pulled over to look at it.We both have no clue.Big black no vis dorsal or side fins.??? Flipper was in the area but not near this thing. It was larger than any flipper.

Sounds like a small whale of some sort. Pilot whales are big but they have a dorsal, but it may have been at an angle you couldn’t see it.

Might help if you let us know where your fishing spot is. Just so everyone could better help you ID that thing!:wink:

On a side note, did Joey come out successful today? I caught some nice reds not far from where we ran into each other this morning, up to 31". Tried a few new spots for flounder and nothing going.

I know there have been several manatee spotted in the icw and in the harbor over the past few weeks…could be the culprit.

I now think is was a young manatee.

Did it look like any of these pics?

I have seen large bat and eagle rays jump really high and far; I,m talking bigger then a car hood jumping about 6-10ft out of the water and just as far or further, I was in a canoe and nearly got free willyed a little ways off from Bowen’s Island, it sounded like a whale breaching. This could be a possible suspect of what you saw, they feed in top water and when really feeding aggressively will put on a show. I once saw one swim zig-zag patterns across the top of water and would of never new what it was if wouldn’t of jumped. I’ve seen them in jetties, folly and stono in the main and off shoot rivers, and you have to get a real good look or you would never guess it was a ray.

If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.

Never seen a manatee breach that fast or that high. It looked like a whale to me. Saw what looked like a Beluga near same spot a few years ago and posted about it and nobody took it seriously.

I thought Beluga but I think they are white??
We saw it Pat so what ever it was We still saw it.

It might have been a pilot whale they look like Belugas but they are dark colored

The head and body were round and kinda tube shaped. It’s a mystery to me, but we did see it, as Joe says!

It looked like a big fat long jet black hot dog.LOL The front part.
