squib?

It’s a reddit thread and a bunch of people are just throwing out guesses. Figured we have more knowledgeable folks here.

OOB (out of battery) discharge…?? That bumpfire stock set off a round before the bolt was cammed into the barrel extension. If it had failed in battery, then the explosive forces would have went DOWN through the magwell.

Also, running those things fast like that can set off a round from heat before it’s time for it to fire also.

But the bullet stuck in the end of the barrel has me wondering if it wasn’t a bad bullet? It got sent through barrel but got stuck, all the gasses had to go somewhere…kaboom.

Or it was wrong caliber? 300 BLK in 5.56?

They’re saying 5.56. If you put 1 300 blk round in a mag full of 5.56 would it even cycle through?

love the dust cover… it rained alright

They’re saying they were shooting Federal 5.56 Green Tip.

If there was a 300 round in there, it would cycle through and then this would happen! The round won’t seat all the way into the chamber, it hangs out a tad, which would explain the OOB discharge. There’s a pic in this article of a 300 cartridge in a 5.56 chamber. Notice it sticks out? If that bumpfire stock was rolling right, then the hammer fell and was “riding” the BCG forward…when the round seated as far as it would go (not all the way, as seen in the pic) then the hammer would contact primer and have an OOB discharge.

That would also explain the bullet not exiting the rifle. Here’s a cutaway of a 300 bullet in a 223 barrel…

I don’t see how that could be the tip of a .308 bullet. I think it was a squip. Did they hammer the stuck bullet out and see if there were 2 in there?

Took me a second to figure out what that is. The projectile is stretched. That’s crazy.

What made the rifle blow up was an out of battery discharge. If the bolt was in battery (lugs engaged into barrel extension) then the barrel would have split or bulged at least…doesn’t appear that way to me.

Again, just my opinions.

Mine too. I don’t know much about AR platform rifles, but know M14’s pretty good. In an M14 that would be an out of battery discharge, which makes a much bigger mess with a 7.62 than 5.56 when it happens :face_with_head_bandage: If the bolt was closed and locked the bullet would have cleared the barrel, or the barrel would have ruptured. It fired before the bolt was locked.
