Over the course of the last couple of months I have acquired about 250 bucks in bass pro gift cards. I want you opinions on what I should buy. I plan on using it on trolling rigs. Remember it has to be stuff I can get there. They will be used for mahi and king.
Blue/White Islander, Green Alien, A spreader bar with green squids, and a ■■■■■ pile of various colored witches. make sure you have the purple and black, and red and black cause the hoos love them.
If I were to get just trolling gear, I’d be sure to grab some 60 & 80 lb mono, swivels, snap swivels, 7/0-9/0 Owner Long Shank J hooks, and as many Islanders and Fishizzle skirts as I could. I like pink/white, blue/white, black/purple, black/red, etc. Sea witches would be a good grab as well.
New to trolling this year also, have been with others in the past but will be doing it on our own this year. Is there a major difference in the offshore angler brand of lures vs. islanders. Other than cost looking more at durability?

The toothy critters seem to tear up the rubber skirts pretty good. Other than that most of the cheaper skirts I have do pretty well.
Buy enough terminal tackle to run 3 or 4 spreads. Leader, hooks, crimps, egg weights, rigging wire, swivels, etc. Get enough where to last you through the season. Without that stuff, you can’t fish.
After that, fill it out with the fun stuff. You’ll probably have $100 left- Islanders and SeaWitches are staples around here, but don’t forget a few cedar plugs for when you’re just feeling lazy.
I also like to run a diving plus like a Stretch 30 or something as I’ve caught grouper, dolphin, wahoo, jacks, snapper, mackerels (cero, spanish and kings) on them. I’m about to get some of the big Bomber 30 ft divers so we’ll see how they do.

Capt. Chris, if I may suggest, try a Yozuri S instead. It’s the best catching plug I’ve ever used
I was in the Keys a while back and we trolled 7 straight days. I pulled a Bomber CD30 alongside a Yozuri S. I never put the Yozuri in the water that it didn’t catch a fish. Tuna, dolphin, wahoo, jacks, kings, cuda, you name it, that lure caught it. Believe it or not, the Bomber didn’t catch a fish the entire week. Not one. The Yozuri came home all beat up with teeth marks all over it. The Bomber still looks brand new. That’s my experience anyway, FWIW
I’ve had good luck with that yellow/green coloration and have heard good things about the Yozuris. I appreciate the tip and might go pick one up this afternoon because it never hurts to try!
Do you rig them on mono or wire? I’ve lost a few plugs to the toothy fish when running it on 60-80 lb mono and might try some 70 lb wire but I’m not sure if it’d spook the fish into not biting?
I rig them on 200 lb. fluorocarbon, crimped. The lure is so big and the lip so large that I haven’t lost one to a toothy, yet. They are usually tangled in both trebles and still well away from the line.
I don’t usually get too excited about a particular lure, most tried and proven designs will catch fish, and I’ve had good luck with different Bombers in the past. This was the first Yozuri I ever used and all I can say is wow. It out fished everything else in the boat, day after day. I’ve got a half dozen of them now:smiley:
Islanders green & yellow, black & orange , sea witches. you do not need the $ 35.00. I am cheap I stock up at the flee markets & garage sales. I have caught dozens of Maui-Maui with green & yellow sea witches
