What would you do?

We have a small piece of property (15 acres) that has been in the family for 50 years. I have been hunting it regularly for the past 15 (15-20 hunts per year). We have two stands, a single on the front and a double (put up this year to hunt with my son) on the back end. The double replaces a single that is still there but not used.

Last year someone put up a stand on the property adjacent to ours. His stand is roughly between our stands; I can see it with binoculars from the front stand and clearly from the second stand. Our stands are on our property line facing into our land (not pointed toward his stand or land). His stand is set up facing across his land onto ours but his corn pile is directly under his stand (looks like a bow or shotgun shot).

Yesterday afternoon my son and I went to hunt the double?he was in his stand. What would you do?

I would have hunted my stand! Do you know the guy? If you do or not, I would make it clear he wasn’t to shoot deer on your property and show him the property line. I would be hard to keep the deer on your side of the line with him baiting. You could keep bait and a lick out as far from the line as you can and still shoot it. You might have to keep your bait pile stocked up so the deer have no reason to go to his.

I would try to make a friend. That way you can report to each other when deer are moving, what you’re seeing, and maybe avoid being in the woods at the same time if that’s what you’re looking for. If you shoot a deer, and it runs onto his property, you’ll be glad you have his phone number.

What did you do?

Hunting, fishing, and poker are my sports. Work when necessary.

Had the same happen to me on an 11 acre tract that butts up to a plantation. The care taker approached me and I now have access to more hunting area than I could possibly hunt. It also opened up a few woods ponds to fish in. We courtesy call when ever we are going to hunt. I’ve also found my feeder full of corn from time to time. Not a bad arrangement.

Hope you have a similar experience.

I told my son (9) to tip as quiet as possible not to disturb him/his hunt…the other hunter yelled something at us once we reached the stand - I did not respond. We sat until well after dark in case he could see something at his close range stand, then we left quietly.

He might be someone that the landowner is allowing to hunt his land and doesn’t know that he is almost over the line. Maybe you can let him know without ruffling feathers by tacking up some NO Hunting signs on your property line. Put one where he can’t miss it from his stand!

If he is bowhunting a lean-to ladder stand with a corn pile, odds are he doesnt have a clue what he is doing… I would point fingers and laugh at him.

(Im somewhat joking)

I agree with this. If he has a house on the property and you see him outside or his vehicle in the driveway, I would stop by, introduce myself etc. If he’s a nice guy i’d have an occasional beer with him.

I just cant stand it and need to bring a little logic into this situation. First off, your hunting 15 acres, period, that’s all you have. Your on the property line facing towards your 15 acres. Ok, this fella is on his side, facing your massive piece of land, at an undisclosed distance, corn pile right under his stand. So he is doing nothing wrong. The way I see it, as long as its not Mr. brush buster himself, aka sniper7, I wouldn’t worry about it, and wonder what the heck your complaining about/trying to address here? If you don’t want people hunting close to you, well that’s going to be an issue on 15 acres. I might suggest maybe a friendly “hey, I’m hunting over here don’t shoot me” if you see him. Pretty simple. If there’s more to the story, please enlighten me, I’m typically rational.

kinda with salty on this one. I would find another place to hunt. He may be a wacko.

" It is what it is".

My question was simple - would you stay or would you go? Would you potential mess up someone else’s hunt? I guess it was more of an ethical question. We stayed. In fact, another family member was in the front stand and I was more concerned with messing him up if we walked out to avoid the stranger (who was hunting on the same size woodlot).

i am confused by Salty’s last sentence. “I’m typically rational” sorry salty; it was out there and i had to take a shot at it. lol lol
