What would you have done

So last week I was up one of the more well known creeks trying to stay out of the wind that was blowing 10-20 from the north. I was anchored up current of a dock fishing it and this boat comes in and ties off to the dock and starts fishing where I had been casting. I should apologize to the cfcommunity for not educating this person on the spot about etiquette and what not to do. Instead I pulled up my anchor and went and found another spot. I wasn’t catching fish so it really didn’t bother me that much but the fact he came in and cut us off was not cool. He had his young son on the boat and like I said I had clients so a shouting match wouldn’t have been good, IMO. I will say a younger Capt. Fritz would have freaked out and the kids would have needed earmuffs. Guess I’m getting soft as I get older.

Here is a classic picture of how to cut someone off that is fishing a dock.

It is what it is!

I have heard a few times that there is a rule/reg that says you have to remain 50’ or so away from a private dock while fishing or shrimping. Surely one of you experts know if this is fact or fiction? In this case I would have had to say something to the other boater although it would have been honestly polite!

That’s the way people are now days. They are oblivious to everyone and everything around. It’s everywhere not just on the water, on the highway, in stores, in parking lot. They are in their own little world. All I can say is “stupidity”. I wouldn’t be afraid to say it wont be the last time it happens.

Fiction-

You must stay a certain distance away from FISHING PIERS ( IE folly fishing pier) in boats while fishing.

Regular/private docks - no such rule

Good on you for being the bigger man, Fritz.

Capt. you’re not getting soft, you’re getting wiser. It’s one of the perks of growing older.

I know that dock.

Just remember were not all this bad.
Last weekend, I had a guy trolling the bank stop and move around me, then start fishing again. He later came back through and sat off a ways watching me pull a few in. We talked for a few minutes, then I invited him to move in closer as the fish seemed to be piled up in one specific spot. Shortly after we were all catching them. He caught them from one side of an oyster bank and I caught them from the other.
Amazing how far a “hello” will go.

Capt, you did the right thing, you get nowhere yelling at a freshwater boat and/or it’s capt. You cant explain what they dont want to understand.

My personal law states “thow shalt not tie their boat to anothers personal property”.

Fritz, you had clients with you so you had to be nice. If it had been me and he did that, I would have moved up about 2ft away from him and commenced to fish like he wasn’t there! When he said anything about it, I would have asked him how he liked it and smiled! Unlike you, as I age I’m just not putting up with as much BS, as I used to!

Fritz, that same exact boat did that to me as I was fishing the last dock in “that” creek. Guess the never learn. Especially after I threw my bait right beside his boat and yanked a 28" red right out from under him. Not to mention, they were getting out of their boat onto a private dock. “Senseless”.

If this particular boater has done this in the past he will do it again. Until someone educates him which should be sooner then later.

This kind of stuff happens on occasion, but generally, folks around here are very courteous. Not to mention, the dock you were fishing is a very popular spot and boats are regulary stacked up in there.

Go down and fish in Florida for a weekend and this type of behavior is the norm.

Pretty sure I did mention I was in a well known area that some of us even refer to as the inshore grillage

Capt, you’ve been fishing these waters for a long time now. You should have learned already. When you see a fish n ski heading your direction, you go the opposite way.

This works out in your favor almost all the time, every time.

That boat is in that creek all the time.

I think it’s pretty inconsiderate.

We’ve also been tied up inside the fenders at the Ben Sawyer and had boats blast through the no-wake zone under the bridge plowing so hard they’ve caused waves to splash over the bow of the boat.

There are a lot of butt-holes out there.

I have an excellent black drum spot very close to there. I, too, have seen people step onto the last dock in that creek. I saw a couple guys with a NC sticker on the boat and they were tied up to it and walking all over it. I asked them if they owned the dock and they said no that they thought it was abandoned because it looked really old. I would not dare pull something like that.

I live right by the Ben Sawyer and people ignore that no wake zone all the time, especially Monday - Friday. I’ve seen 50 plus foot boats ignore that no wake zone dozens and dozens of times at low tide and they send a 3-4 foot cresting wake towards the dock I live on.

At that same Ben Sawyer bridge, I was almost run over by a sport fisher coming behind me while going under the bridge. The boat came several feet from hitting me and I stared back at the captain in disbelief. We were so close together that I asked him what his deal was and he said he couldn’t go any slower with his big inboards. I asked him how he docked his boat then and if he knew how to put an engine in neutral…unbelievable.

Nothing suprises me any longer and I am sure all of us could share war stories for hours on these types of experiences.

There are so many people fishing these days its near impossible to fish a good spot alone. I just pick up and leave because they don’t get it and will shout right back. This is common with some of the guides too. They think its “his/her” spot so they come right in. You did the right thing IMO<><
